How does Katie Couric train at 69? Inside her workout routine for a stronger physique
Staying active has become an important part of Katie Couric's routine as she looks after her health at 69. The journalist recently gave followers a look at the strength workout she uses while managing osteopenia.
Couric has spoken openly about the condition, which means her workout has a specific purpose beyond simply building muscle. In a recent Instagram post, Couric shared six exercises from one of her workouts.
“I try to do three days a week, two with my wonderful trainer @dstranskytraining and another by myself watching his videos on YouTube, and it's true, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!!!” Couric wrote.
Resistance training can help maintain and strengthen bones, and Couric said she now makes it part of her routine three days a week.
Couric added that she has osteopenia and is trying to strengthen her bones. As per her Instagram post (@katiecouric), her routine combines dumbbells, cables, and a TRX to work both her upper and lower body.

1. TRX row
Couric starts with a TRX row, an exercise that targets the upper back while also requiring the body to stay stable throughout the movement.
With the straps shortened, she leans back while keeping her body in a straight line. Pulling the handles toward her chest works the back and arms before she returns to the starting position with control.
2. Overhead cable triceps extension
The workout then moves to an overhead cable triceps extension. Couric uses a rope attachment while standing in a split stance for stability.
The movement focuses on extending the elbows while keeping the upper arms relatively still.
3. Step-out goblet squat
For the lower body, Couric performs a step-out goblet squat while holding a dumbbell against her chest.
She steps to the side, lowers into a squat and then drives through her feet to stand before bringing her feet back together.
4. Seated dumbbell shoulder press
The seated dumbbell shoulder press brings the focus back to the upper body.
Couric sits against an upright bench and presses a dumbbell in each hand overhead. Keeping her back supported allows her to focus on the pressing movement.
5. Standing cable bicep curl
Couric also includes standing cable bicep curls using a rope attachment.
The exercise keeps the upper arms close to the body while the elbows bend to bring the rope toward the shoulders. She then lowers the weight under control.
6. Single-arm dumbbell lateral lunge
The final exercise combines a lateral movement with a dumbbell.
Couric shifts her weight onto one leg, bends the working knee and pushes her hips back while keeping the opposite leg straight. She then pushes through the working foot to return to the starting position.
For Couric, the routine is about more than adding another workout to a busy schedule. She said she is sticking with strength training because she wants to help strengthen her bones, making consistency an important part of her approach.
