How Exercise Transformed Gary Neville’s Life After Football

Gary Neville assumed his life would take a different turn after retiring as football captain in 2021. However, what he thought would be a much-needed break turned out to be something else. The first two years after retiring, Neville took it easy, not focusing on fitness and nutrition, only to realize that’s not how he wanted to live his life.

An intervention from his wife gave Neville the wake-up call he needed. He realized that his life felt incomplete without fitness and training. Moreover, he realized it also does wonders for his mental health.

”I feel like I can't go without training,” Neville explained. “If I go three, four, or five days without training, then it's not the end of the world, but if I go two weeks without it, I start to feel heavy.”

“I start to feel like I'm losing strength. You start to feel like you're going under a little bit. I didn't prepare for the fact that not training, eating more, and not being able to cope without that fitness structure in my life every single day.”

Now, nearly a decade after leaving football, Neville has designed a simple five-day fitness routine for his physical and mental health.

He begins his mornings early at 5.15 am daily. After a quick coffee and going through the news, he walks to the gym. At the gym, he engages in high-intensity, circuit-style training. However, he also ensures to strength train regularly.

While exercise has been playing a major role in Neville’s wellness journey post-retirement, the key to a successful wellness routine, he believes, is structure.

Why Structure is the Foundation of Gary Neville’s Wellness

Overall health and wellness became a priority for Neville, especially after his retirement. Although he followed a structured lifestyle when he was a captain, he started to take things easy soon after retiring.

It was only once he had put on a lot of weight that he realized how much he missed structure and routine in his life.

“My whole life has been about routine and repetition. Even now, I need structure in every part of my life,” he told The Times.

He created a routine that works for him, and he admits to feeling strong, healthy, and like his old self again. The structured routine helps him stay active throughout the week, giving him a sense of purpose.

Furthermore, it makes consistency much easier, even on the days he doesn’t feel as motivated.

Neville’s philosophy is not to follow quick fixes or fads. Rather, he believes in structure, routine, and consistency for overall physical and mental health.
