How Jason Momoa Built His Physique Without the Mainstream Bulk-Up

Jason Momoa is known for a lot of things: his incredible role in Aquaman, his stunning, flowy mane, and his Greek God physique. Now, as he gears up to bring DC antihero Lobo to life in Supergirl, he reveals how he built his physique without the Hollywood bulk-up.

Momoa is known for giving 100% in any role he plays. This means putting in the work, training, and strict diets. However, for his new antihero role, he revealed how he didn’t go the traditional bulking-up route. Instead, it was mainly the work of prosthetics.

“I didn’t have to do s***!” he laughed and said to Men's Journal (per Men's Health Magazine).

The reason behind his not going the traditional route was simple. Lobo’s upper body is outrageously big, something Momoa could not just ‘train’ into. He admitted that there was ‘no way’ he could train to become that big. Moreover, he revealed that he personally did not want to look that big.

"I don’t want to walk around like that; I can’t fit in a suit, can’t even fit through a doorway. I’m big enough," he said, according to Men’s Health magazine.

Even though Momoa was not required to go on a very strict diet or workout routine to fit into his role, he has been known to engage in role-specific training and diets for previous movies.

How Jason Momoa trained and ate for his iconic action roles

Although Momoa’s latest body transformation did not take the traditional path, he worked extremely hard for his previous roles. This includes his iconic physiques for Conan the Barbarian, Khal Drago, Aquaman, and Duncan Idaho.

According to Men’s Health magazine, Momoa has had to swing between superhero-level training and pigging out on steak and pizza for different roles.

He revealed that he was too small for his role in Game of Thrones, which forced him to stick to a diet filled with pizzas and steak to put on the mass he required.

Of course, he paired the diet with intense heavy lifting.

Similarly, when he had to get leaner for his role in Aquaman, his diet changed drastically. He quickly switched to avocado, eggs, sardines, and rice. However, he also indulged in biscuits and gravy and traditional Hawaiian food.

Furthermore, he enjoyed meals like buttered spaghetti with caviar, keeping just enough room at the end of his long days for three Guinness.

Momoa has always been vocal about his love for rock climbing, and certain roles allowed him to explore his obsession again.

When training for Aquaman, his coach, Mark Twight, worked around his rock climbing obsession, allowing him to train in a way that made the entire journey enjoyable.

His workouts during the time typically focused on chest exercises like push-ups, incline bench presses, standing dumbbell presses, and more.

Momoa proves that physical transformations don’t always require major, unrealistic bulking up. Audiences are excited to see him in yet another unforgettable on-screen character in Supergirl.
