How Lisa Hogan Stays Fit at 54 Despite Quitting the Traditional Gym

Still believe that for a fit, toned physique, one needs to follow an intense, rigid gym training routine? Meet the Clarkson's Farm actress Lisa Hogan, who maintains a toned physique with an unconventional exercise routine without stepping into the gym.

Let’s unroll her fitness secret.

She, along with her husband Jeremy Clarkson, runs a farm in the Oxfordshire countryside in the UK called Diddly Squat Farm. According to Women’s Health, Hogan credits the physical labor she does on the farm for her fitness.

In the promotional interview for her Amazon Prime series, named Clarkson's Farm, she said: “We spent a day picking elderflower from the hedgerows, we're always foraging: I've given up the gym now, being on the farm keeps me fit.”

Hogan farm workout includes many functional movements daily, such as:

  • Walking across uneven farmland for miles
  • Chasing livestock (sheep, hens, cows, etc)
  • Lifting heavy crates

So, basically, her fitness approach builds on the philosophy of NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). According to research published in the American Journal of Physiology, NEAT refers to the energy burned without intense gym training, simply by doing everyday home chores.

The study also highlights that when a person moves from a sedentary lifestyle or a desk job to physical farm or agricultural work, such as Hogan does, a person’s metabolic rate can increase by up to 1200 calories per day.

Apart from calorie burning, engaging in agricultural work can also significantly boost:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Muscular endurance
  • Weight management

However, the NEAT does not include only agricultural work; it also includes a wide range of other forms of movement, such as:

  • Walking
  • Climbing upstairs
  • Carrying groceries
  • Playing with pets and kids
  • Gardening, etc

Now, let's see exactly how she contributes to her fitness after leaving gym training behind.

Lisa Hogan’s fitness routine

Hogan regularly shared videos of herself playing and walking with the livestock on the farm, which involves plenty of movement and adds to her overall fitness. On January 11, she shared a video on her Instagram, captioning “Diddly Squat Farm Puppy get together. My heart is bursting 😍”

In the video, Hogan was seen with a lot of dogs (puppies), walking and bathing them because the dogs got dirty after playing and walking on the farm.

In another video, shared by the official Instagram handle of Diddly Squat Farm Shop on October 8, 2025, she was seen chasing the hen and jumping the fence to move from one field to another. The post reads, “Chickens failed in their task. Geese, hopeless. However, plan C will be victorious.”

Another video was shared by Diddly Squat Farm Shop on June 21, 2025, captioned “Strawberry Farmering 🍓🚜”. In the video, Hogan was seen lifting and carrying a heavy cart of strawberry saplings from one place to another to plant them in the field. This not only maintained her fitness but also built endurance and muscle through such lifting and carrying activities.

At 54, Hogan proves fitness doesn't require a rigid gym routine—daily movement works.
