How Safe Is Kourtney Kardashian’s Go-To Health Drink? Reality of Matcha

Based on expert advice and knowledge of Kunal Sood, a double board-certified MD, and the article available at Health.

Kourtney Kardashian has often been seen sipping matcha. While this popular Japanese green drink is loved worldwide for its high antioxidant content, calming effects, and refreshing flavor, there is concern about consuming it in excess.

Let’s explore the downsides of matcha.

On November 25, 2025, Kunal Sood shared a video on his Instagram, asking a serious question about Matcha. The caption of the post reads: “Matcha is packed with antioxidants, but drinking it with meals can block iron absorption.”

The post added: “Its polyphenols bind to non-heme iron in the gut, making it harder for the body to absorb, and over time this can even lead to anemia.”

In the clip, Sood was seen explaining, “Matcha is also seen as a superfood rich in antioxidants, calming compounds, and a steady caffeine boost. But drinking too much matcha can actually contribute to iron deficiency over time.”

The doctor explained, “Matcha is made from powdered whole tea leaves, so it contains a high concentration of polyphenols, especially catechins like EGCG. These compounds can bind to non-heme iron, the form of iron found in plant-based foods, and create complexes that the body can't absorb efficiently.”

Sood said non-heme iron is naturally more difficult to absorb than animal-based iron, which is why drinking matcha with meals can reduce iron absorption.  In fact, the widespread consumption of matcha can also cause anemia, which ultimately results in:

  • Fatigue
  • Pale skin
  • Easy bruising

Due to the presence of polyphenols, iron absorption is hindered in the body. So, does that mean Dr. Sood is advising to eliminate matcha?

Does This Mean to Completely Avoid Matcha?

The answer is pretty simple; it all depends on when you consume it. Sood advised to “enjoy it away from meals or a few hours after eating to help your body absorb iron properly.”

So, one should consume it between meals rather than with meals. To boost iron absorption, pair it with vitamin C-rich foods such as lemon and berries.

Recommended Dosage of Matcha

According to an article available at Health, Matcha contains a high amount of caffeine. A teaspoon of matcha, which is 2 grams, contains almost 37.8 to 88.8 milligrams of caffeine.

The recommended dose of caffeine is 400 milligrams a day, which is why one can consume up to two cups of matcha daily to stay under the suggested caffeine limit.

Kardashian’s green drink is definitely healthy and has multiple benefits, but make sure to use it in moderation. Stay under a 2-cup limit daily and consume it between meals to stay healthy and fit.
