How To Follow A Clean Diet While Travelling: Do’s and Don’ts
Just because you’re on a trip doesn’t mean your diet should go on vacation as well. Many people use vacations as an excuse to indulge, never going back to the grind. But whether you’re on a business trip, a vacation, or a group getaway, your diet should still be at least somewhat on point.
“The best way to plan for your meals is to plan your trip. By planning all the places you want to explore, you get a good idea of what your days will look like,” said registered dietician Jose Velazquez.
So, what to do? Well, let’s have a direct, evidence-aligned guide
Plan and Structure Meals
Do:
Make sure to have a schedule for the trip. A gap of 4-6 hours without food increases the likelihood of impulsive buying. So, make sure to schedule the eating time such that regular meals help regulate the hunger signals.
While eating at a restaurant, try to choose grilled, baked, or steamed options rather than fried ones.
Pro-Tip: Pre-select the restaurants.
Lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, and whole foods should be prioritized over high-sugar, high-fat, and processed foods. Higher protein and fiber intake improves satiety and metabolic regulation.
Don’t:
Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach, and have water after each session
Wait until you are very hungry to decide where to eat; this consistently results in calorie-dense, nutrient-poor meals.
Pack and Consume Smart Snacks
Do:
If you are not keen on spending too much on eating outside, then you can pick high-fiber, high-protein snacks like nuts, boiled eggs, fruit, protein bars, and much more to have a nutritious bite and prevent any cravings.
Make sure to keep a refillable water bottle with you. “We tend to walk more on vacation than at home, we get thirstier, and if we don’t have water with us, we will likely drink soda, juice, or any other sugary beverage,” said Velazquez
Don’t:
Having sudden hunger pangs, and there’s a vending machine nearby? Try to stay as far away from it as possible. All the snacks are high in sodium, unhealthy fats, and sugar.
According to Velasquez, “Try to make good food choices while traveling. If things didn’t go as well as you hoped for during the trip, start over once you get home. Work your way back to where you were before the trip and improve as you can.”
Bottom line: plan everything even before boarding that plane, or that train, and make sure you stay on track by choosing healthy. And healthy food doesn't always have to mean bland.
