“I Wanted to Transform”- Dwayne Johnson Reveals How ‘Smashing Machine’ Changed His Life

“The truth is, this film has changed my life. With deep gratitude, respect, and radical empathy,” wrote Dwayne Johnson in an Instagram post dedicated to The Smashing Machine. The A24-backed film may have stumbled at the box office, pulling in just $5.9 million in its opening weeks, but numbers tell only half the story.

While the project failed to ignite fan frenzy, it made a serious change in Johnson’s life. In a conversation with Elvis Mitchell, ‘The Rock’ revealed he was navigating a different kind of crisis when The Smashing Machine arrived as a lifeline: “Smashing Machine changed my life in such a way that I didn’t anticipate. I still wanted to chase a challenge in ways that I had not been challenged before. With Smashing Machine, I wanted to disappear.”

He further added, “I wanted to transform because I thought, as an actor—and this was self-imposed—I didn’t know if I could disappear. I didn’t know if I could become a character actor. I don’t know. I would like to try, but I don’t know. I want to, and I was hungry to do that, and it presented itself for me.”

Hectic scheduling often strips the charm from a job, even one you love, and the same happened with Dwayne Johnson. After delivering back-to-back box office successes through franchise films such as Fast & Furious and Moana, the pace began to take a toll on his mental health. The Smashing Machine arrived as a starkly different role, one that Johnson genuinely enjoyed.

Despite receiving critical praise, the film was hit hard by audiences. At the box office, it generated only $21 million worldwide, including $11.4 million domestically, against a production budget of $50 million. But there's another side to the story.

Dwayne Johnson receives praise from the highest places for ‘Smashing Machine.’

The movie, in itself, might have been a disaster at the box office, but it certainly captured the hearts of critics. Kurt Angle publicly argued that the project deserved serious Best Picture consideration, crediting Dwayne Johnson’s transformation into MMA legend Mark Kerr.

And, Angle is not alone! Even Christopher Nolan believes that Johnson’s performance amazed him. Speaking on the Directors Guild of America’s The Director’s Cut podcast, he portrayed the movie as “heartbreaking” and “incredible,” before expressing his real thoughts, “I do not think you will see a better performance this year or most other years.”

Dwayne Johnson might have failed at the box office, but got all the praise from the high table. And, guess what, this was just the start. ‘The Rock’ has received its first Golden Globe nomination for ‘Smashing Machine.’
