“I'm Bummed”: Jason Momoa Admits Difficulties in Cutting Weight and Maintaining a Strict Diet

Father Time has a way of catching up to everyone, and Hollywood stars are no different. This time, it's Jason Momoa who opened up about how his eating habits have changed over the years.

Aquaman recently sat down with Men’s Health for their latest “Eat Like” segment and opened up about how difficult it is for him to cut weight.

When asked if he counts macros, Momoa said:

"You know, I have a chef when I'm working, so it depends on what role I have. Sometimes I got to gain weight, some I got to lose weight, but it's like I got to lose weight. I'm bummed... Justice League and Aquaman, all the superhero kind of—I'm not like a guy that wants to walk around for that. I'm old now. So, that was a young man's game. Now, it's like it's all about my heart and probably like live a little less stress-free."

At 46, Momoa has a few struggles when it comes to regulating his physique. Part of the reason are injuries during filming. Back in 2022, he even battled a hernia injury that required surgery and made mobility slightly difficult. As a result, the focus is now more on regulating his diet. So what does he eat?

This includes a mix of black rice, avocado, sardines, and a sunny-side-up egg. For lunch, he eats chicken, and, "whatever I’m supposed to do, keeps it clean.”

In addition to this, there's one major change. “I don’t eat too much red meat anymore. I used to be like steak every day, you know. I’m almost 50, and I’m like I got to lay off the caviar, oysters, beer, red wine, all the things that are, you know, king’s diet.”

At The Same Time, Jason Momoa Has Changed His Way of Working Out

Back in 2016, when he was preparing for his role in Justice League, Momoa put all his efforts into weight training. However, nearly a decade later, instead of going super heavy with weights, Momoa has discovered that functional free weights are more suitable.

He explained, "I still get tempted from time to time to max lift and add those two extra plates on, but that’s when I need to have a conversation with myself and make sure I don’t do something that’s going to do more damage than good."

The risk of injury lingers for the actor. "I’ve got a little more wisdom now. I’ve been through this dance for 45 years."
