Inside Colman Domingo’s Training Routine to Stay Jacked at 56

Colman Domingo is the new Hollywood favorite, but not because of his flawless acting; it's also because he has managed to stay fit with a chiseled body at 56.

Men's Health recently got a chance to spend some time with the Euphoria star to learn how he has managed to maintain a shredded body that can compete with many of his younger costars. During the interview, Domingo revealed that over the years, he had to change his fitness philosophy to adapt to his age.

And now, at 56, his fitness priorities lie in flexibility, cardio, and recovery instead of building a muscular physique in the gym. "You look at your lean self and your very natural self, and you think, well, maybe I could use a boost," he says.

Since the past decade, Domingo has been working with trainer and friend Vann Duke, founder of fitness company SecondHalf Fitness, which focuses on training people over 50.

Domingo’s training is mostly cardio-based because bulking up is no longer his goal. His main objective is to build a flexible and lean body. He wakes up at 4 am and heads to the gym for his cardio, followed by a thermal pool session and sauna. His regimen also includes activities like yoga and meditation.

‘Rest and recovery have become increasingly important in his life,’ Domingo says. ‘Because I travel so much, I need that.’

The Michael star even admitted to considering undergoing testosterone therapy because he discovered that his levels were already higher than what they should be.

Besides following a dedicated training regimen, Domingo has incorporated an active schedule that keeps him fit and running. It includes activities like:

  1. Daily walks
  2. Ensuring to get movement throughout the day
  3. Keep on dancing
  4. Remember to go on hikes
  5. Train for excellent mobility and flexibility
  6. Don't forget to perform strength and conditioning workouts

That was all for his training program; his diet routine is also impressive. Instead of following crash diets or extreme bulking routines, Domingo goes for moderation and clean eating

His diet includes:

  • Consuming enough lean proteins
  • Incorporate vegetables and nutrient-focused meals
  • Remembering to stay hydrated throughout the day
  • Eating to gain energy and support recovery
  • Do not follow an extremely restrictive diet plan

Just like his training, Domingo has adapted his diet according to his age. Instead of choosing extreme diet plans, he focuses on long-term maintenance. Domingo says he no longer counts calories; he “barters with them.” In fact, his morning routine is also as chill as his performance on camera.

Colman Domingo’s Morning Routine

Colman Domingo follows the most effortless and hassle-free morning routine anyone can imagine. It has the following steps

  • He wakes up at 6 am and only sets an alarm when he has to. Even though he is a night owl, he still makes sure to wake up early.
  • After waking up, he takes some time to sit in his garden and prepare for the day. It's the only time he gets to be quiet.
  • He then has a big glass of water and prepares his coffee, before heading to his study to schedule meetings, answer e-mails, and make phone calls.
  • Then comes the time for breakfast, which includes bacon and sunny-side-up eggs. If he is in the mood, he might add a whole avocado with kimchi and an egg.
  • Then it's time for some personal grooming.
  • Workout, if he has time. Otherwise, it can be done later.

Then it is time to be fabulous on screen.
