Inside Joe Rogan’s Training System, Inspired by Kettlebell & Hot Yoga at 58

While most 58-year-olds move rapidly towards a sedentary lifestyle, Joe Rogan stands out from the crowd for his dedication to training. 'The Joe Rogan Experience' host delves into several activities, including hot yoga, to keep himself in far better shape than men of his age.

Rogan calls himself a lifelong martial artist and has been training in various forms of combat since his teenage years. A June 7 Instagram post revealed Rogan trains daily, following his philosophy: light daily workouts beat occasional intense sessions.

It quoted him, "Instead of having one workout every three days where you blow your body out, have one workout every day where you don’t. You’ll get stronger quicker."

So let's take a look at the specifics of his training routine:

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: To keep up his combat skills
  • Kickboxing: To keep up his combat skills
  • Trail running: For cardiovascular conditioning
  • Hot Yoga: 2 times per week to boost mobility and flexibility, the two key requirements for BJJ
  • Kettlebell workouts: Follows the Tsatsouline workout protocol to boost conditional strength
  • Sauna: Relaxation and recovery
  • Cold Plunge: Relaxation and recovery

The motive behind Rogan's training is to maintain his skills, with little focus on looking good.

And he does a good job of achieving his objectives, as even one of the greatest UFC fighters ever, Georges St-Pierre, wanted to learn from him.

Georges St-Pierre wanted to perfect Joe Rogan's spinning back-kick

Rogan may have earned black belts in BJJ in both the gi and no gi departments, but he trained in taekwondo for multiple years during his teenage years, and also earned multiple accolades at the state level.

When the former UFC welterweight champ and arguably the greatest of all time, Georges St-Pierre, graced the platform of Rogan's podcast, he had already turned 50. Still, St-Pierre couldn't resist asking Rogan to teach him his spinning back kick.

GSP's appearance at JRE MMA Show #28 in 2018 displayed their backstage training session, where Rogan instructed St-Pierre how to land brutal spinning leg kicks like him. Later during the show, GSP pointed out why Rogan's kicks were so powerful.

He said, "I'm still working on it, but I can't do it like you do, with the knee coming out." St-Pierre realized that the problem lies in their martial arts backgrounds, with Rogan having a taekwondo background compared to GSP's karate.

But then, delivering such thudding kicks at an age over 50 also says a lot about how Rogan's training helps him maintain his condition and skills.

Now that you know what he does, are you thinking of incorporating any of them in your routine?
