“It Can Tighten You up”- Rob Gronkowski on His Workout Shift From Heavy Lifting to ‘Pilable’ Yoga at 36

Rob Gronkowski cemented his legacy as one of the NFL’s greatest with four Super Bowl rings, five Pro Bowl nods, and relentless gym lessons. But times have changed.

It has been more than 3 years since he walked out of the sport, and 1 year since he formally retired after the notable 'one-day' contract with the New England Patriots. He now works as an Analyst, primarily with Fox.

So when he sat with Dr. Pat Davidson on a recent episode of Strong Talk, and was asked: “Tell us about you. Like, physically, where are you right now? What are your workouts like?” Rob responded by explaining that his workouts have changed significantly over time, admitting that while he built strength in his younger years, he neglected his core.

“I like to do workouts now where, you know, it keeps you more, you know, pliable. It keeps you more loose instead of just lifting heavy. And just lifting heavy is great, but it can tighten you up as well if you don't counter it,” said the former Buccaneers Tight End.

“So I love yoga still. I've done Pilates once or twice. I'm—I can't say I'm not a Pilates guy, but I also can't say I am a Pilates guy. I loved going, but I just haven't gone back since I've done it twice.”

Heavy strength training was his go-to routine when he was young, but he admits neglecting his core was a mistake. If he could go back and start his career all over again, core training would be non-negotiable.

Now the question is, how did he train himself during his NFL days for games? Let’s hear it from the man himself.

What Are Some of the Favourite Exercise by Rob Gronkowski?

Speaking to Men’s Journal, the Buccaneers tight end revealed that resistance training is one of his favorite ways to train. “I love doing resistance workouts, especially with resistance bands. I feel like they just help me out big time, keep me loose, keep my body strong, and keep me moving quick.”

Apart from that, he is a big fan of calisthenics. “I love doing just bodyweight type workouts, just a lot of high reps of those.”

Rob argues that while it’s nice to have a gym at your disposal, one doesn’t have access to weights all the time, which is why using your own body for workouts or even nature—“A log, a big rock, whatever you have” is highly beneficial.
