Jacob Kiplimo Explains Training Routine Behind His Records

Jacob Kiplimo from Uganda has discussed his hard work and training methods behind his relentless run at the London Marathon.

The runner, already a world record holder in the half-marathon division, ran 2:00:28, one of the fastest marathon times, surpassing Kelvin Kiptum’s record.

Apart from this, the 25-year-old athlete is also a 4-time world cross-country winner and a Commonwealth Games gold medalist in the 5,000m and 10,000m.

So, what is the training secret behind such a powerful resume? Let's find out.

High-mileage training

To win a marathon, one needs to practice running daily, and Kiplimo is no exception. Before his competition in Chicago, he used to run nearly 2065 km in easy runs, covering distances between 15 and 25 km.

Apart from that, Kiplimo used to complete long road runs and track sessions, running 40 km.

Beyond training, the athlete also used real-time data to structure his training sessions and recovery. His main mantra during his training was consistency.

His long runs mostly took place in Kapchorwa, where the hot climate and high altitude made his training more challenging.

So, what does his typical long-run day look like?

Jacob Kiplimo’s long run day routine

The following is the routine for a long-run day for the athlete:

  • He wakes up early at 4 am and consumes some calories with his breakfast
  • By 5:40 am, Kiplimo leaves his house for the training location
  • By 6:30 am he completes his warm-up
  • His run starts at 7 am
  • After his session, he eats a healthy, nutritious breakfast for recovery at 10 am
  • He often visits a physiotherapist for a massage at 11 am
  • His lunch is at 1 pm, which contains a bowl of porridge
  • He completes his dinner by 8 pm and goes to bed by 10 pm

The champion mindset

Kiplimo said, “There’s no difference between other runners and me. It’s only about hard work”.

This highlights his grounded mindset. Despite winning many titles, the Ugandan track runner does not consider them a big deal because he has set his sights on achieving more.

Talking about the difference between marathon running and short-distance running, Kiplimo said, “There is a big difference because for a marathon you need to do a lot of long runs and run a lot of mileage, so the preparation is more difficult and demanding”.

So, this is the commitment and hard work that helped Kiplimo reach this peak.
