Ken Rideout shares the mindset that led to sobriety and speed

From personal struggles to peak performance, marathoner Ken Rideout revealed the mental shift that changed his life and unlocked his elite running speed.
On March 20, 2026, The Anik & Florian Podcast shared a short video on its Instagram, featuring Rideout, with the caption: “I was in survival mode. 🙏. Ken Rideout opens up to Jon Anik and Kenny Florian about the mindset that helped him get sober—and become one of the fastest marathon runners in the world 💯”
During his appearance on the podcast, the former prison guard said, “When you find yourself in a deep hole, like I was in this hole of a*******, the first thing you have to do is cut out the don'ts. “
He further added, “I stopped doing all the s*** that was being counterproductive to my life, stopped doing d****, got sober, which was a whole challenge in itself that I write about extensively.”
The 54-year-old content creator admitted to starting to exercise with extreme discipline, including running 10 miles a day. He also admitted that he has never missed running over the last 5 years and said, “I've run about 4 000 miles a year.”
His recovery method is quite different, as he likes active recovery and said, “ I'd run slow when I felt good, I would drill it as hard as I could.
I” mean, dude, it's like jiu jitsu if you train two times a day every single day for five years, like you're probably gonna be close to a black belt, right?”.
The author of the book “Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard: A Memoir” revealed that his philosophy is to never give up. During his transformation period, he focused on one thing: his own mental and physical health.
Apart from running, he followed a well-structured, balanced routine throughout the day, which helped him stay active and fit in his 50s.
