Late Martial Arts Icon Chuck Norris Once Recalled Filming With Bruce Lee
It is simply hard to forget the cult movie Return of the Dragon, and just two months ago, Hollywood lost one of its favorite action heroes from the film, Chuck Norris. Following his death, an unfiltered interview with Norris surfaced online in which he spoke about his co-star, Bruce Lee.
In the interview clip, Norris shared a story that took fans on a nostalgic ride. Norris spoke of his gratitude for Lee, but also reminded him that he was a real fighter who fought in the ring.
"He called me up and said, 'I want to do a movie with a fight scene that everyone will remember, called Return of the Dragon. Would you come over and do the fight scene with me?" Norris recalled. "I said, 'Well, do I have to lose?' He says, 'Yeah, you have to lose.'"
Norris, having watched Lee's previous films, knew the on-screen dynamic was always lopsided in Lee's favor. "The guys you fight don't even have a chance. I mean, they don't even touch you," he told Lee directly. But Lee had other plans — "No, no, we'll make this a seesaw battle" — and what followed became a classic.
Norris also claimed he was the first fighter Lee ever allowed to knock him down on screen — a moment fans still rewatch decades later. The reason, Norris said, came down to respect. "He respected me because of my ability as a world champion at the time."
Norris was not a show fighter; he actually understood what it meant to fight in a setup where the opponent was as skilled as he was.
Chuck Norris once drew a Clear Line Between Bruce Lee and a Real Fighter
Chuck Norris was a professional fighter and Middleweight Karate World Champion from 1968 to 1974. He was undefeated for 6 years before he decided to retire.
Norris was a seasoned competitor with extensive experience in fight-or-flight situations, knowing how to perform under pressure.
He trained in Tang Soo Do during his time in the U.S. Air Force and later studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the Machado brothers. He even holds a BJJ black belt.
Thus, when Norris recalled those moments when he knocked Bruce Lee down, he said it loud and clear, "He never fought in the ring. Big difference, you know — kicking the bag is one thing, getting in the ring and having someone kicking back at you is a whole different story."
Norris and Lee may have only shared the screen once, but that single nine-minute bout cemented both men in cinematic history.
