LeBron James Explains How Sleeping Over Eight Hours Helps Him Re-Energize His Body

Sleep plays a vital role in good health, and NBA star LeBron James prioritizes it, too. In a recent Instagram video posted by Strength Coach, Brianna Sayer, James opened up about his sleep cycle and its benefits.

While most athletes often talk about their fitness routines and diets, few open up about the importance of recovery. But James did in regard to his sleep routine.

“I love to sleep," he shared. "I have to get my eight hours of sleep, eight hours plus. I think it’s the best way to re-energize your body, re-energize your mind, re-energize your spirit, re-energize everything."

Strength coach Sayer backs up his claim, stating some interesting facts. She talks about how an average NBA career only lasts about four to five years.

Many elite athletes can stretch that for even 10 to 20 years. However, James has continued his career for 23 years and counting, and it’s not by accident.

Sayer emphasizes the importance of training, nutrition, and high-level recovery, something most people often overlook. Sleep is one of the most overlooked yet important aspects of good recovery, helping your body repair, rebuild, and perform better.

Though now in his 40s, James remains highly committed to maintaining his physical condition.

As reported by Breakthrough Basketball, if he fails to manage time to sleep eight to nine hours, which happens occasionally, he takes naps up to two and half hours during the middle of the day.

From rigorous training to prioritizing rest and recovery, here is what his training and recovery look like.

Inside LeBron James’ Training and Recovery Routine

James follows a strict training, diet, and recovery schedule. This is something he practices regularly, not just ahead of important games.

The 4x NBA champion's training includes functional strength training, mobility, and core stability, as opposed to traditional bodybuilding style workouts. He also focuses on basketball-specific drills to help him maintain explosive power and endurance.

Besides all, he prioritizes rest and recovery, revealing that he once slept for 12 hours before a game.

"For LeBron, it’s always in his hotel room, making sure the temperature’s set at a particular – probably 68 to 70 degrees is probably optimal," his trainer Mike Mancias revealed James' nighttime routine during an interview with CNBC.

According to Time Magazine, James also enjoys cold and heat therapy, wearing compression garments, massages, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Moreover, James encourages meditating to boost mental recovery and enhance sleep.

“Just turn everything off, probably a half hour to 45 minutes before you actually want to go to sleep, and just really committing yourself to that," James said.

Rest and recovery have become key tools in helping LeBron James maintain his elite standard year after year.
