Mike Sommerfeld’s victory at the 2026 Arnold Classic UK may have quieted critics who questioned his credibility in bodybuilding after he missed out on participating in two consecutive competitions: Arnold Classic Ohio and Detroit Pro, but it has sparked another debate.

This time, the debate is all about: how big is too big? Although it is subjective, Lee Priest states that Sommerfeld is not ideal for the Classic Physique, and he “looks like 212” fit.

This all began during the Desktop Bodybuilding podcast when, on March 31, Priest was asked whether he considers Sommerfeld a contender for Olympia with that package.

In response, the Austrian bodybuilder said, “When I look at Mike, I don’t really see classic. I see like a bodybuilder, even like a 212 bodybuilder.

Whereas Wesley, I guess, just being taller, flows more like classic lines than Mike.”

He continued, “Mike just looks like a shorter stocky bodybuilder, not classic to me.  I’d actually like to see Mike go into the 212 and bodybuilding and out of the classic like, I said, every time I see him up there, he just looks like a bodybuilder in a classic class.”

The debate about Classic Physique isn't new; it dates back decades and is based on a fundamental divide: mass versus aesthetics. Iconic figures like Steve Reeves, with his X-frame, small waist, and symmetry, set early standards. Later, during the era of Ronnie Coleman and Dorian Yates, the focus shifted toward intense proportions and size.

As physiques became more freakish and larger, fans and legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger, the 7-time Mr. Olympia, called for a return to a visually pleasing and balanced physique. This led to the establishment of the Classic Physique division, which rewards proportion, timeless aesthetics, and symmetry over mass.

Now, returning to Priest’s thoughts on Sommerfeld, many fans might not agree with the narrative.

His rise has been years in the making. Since earning his IFBB Pro card in 2019, Sommerfeld has steadily climbed the ranks, emerging as one of the top contenders in Classic Physique. In 2021, Sommerfeld earned the titles of Xtreme Bodybuilding & Fitness Pro and 2021 Poland Supershow Pro.

After that, in 2021, he placed 7th at the Olympia and 5th in 2022. He was also the runner-up at the 2024 Mr. Olympia in the Classic Physique division.

In 2025, Sommerfeld won the Arnold Classic title in the Classic Physique division. In 2026, he was among the fans' favorites, but due to a weight issue, he was not qualified for the Arnold Classic Ohio competition. However, he came back with full passion and proved himself again by winning the 2026 Arnold Classic UK.

While the debate about Sommerfeld's position in Classic Physique has started to erupt, the bodybuilder himself opened up about his choice of division.

Mike Sommerfeld's Choice of Division

On March 31, BTS TV's Instagram account posted a short clip from the Monday Night Muscle podcast, in which Sommerfeld appeared alongside Ryan Terry and Wendy Fortino.

During the podcast, he said, “I am classic, I will be classic, and I will be forever classic. I won't compete in Open, I won't compete in 212, never ever.”

If I compete in Open, it's not a competition; it is fun. If I ever step on an Open stage, it's just for the crowd, it's just for me, it has nothing to do with the show. I am classic, I am staying classic, and I will be ever a classic athlete.”

With the statement, Sommerfeld clarified all doubts about his choice.

Supporting Sommerfeld's decision, the 8-time Mr. Olympia, Lee Haney commented, “classic is beautiful and much more appealing to the upcoming bodybuilders and general population🫵🏿👌🏿.”
