Legendary Head Judge Becky Clawson Praises Sandy Williamson’s Legacy

Becky Clawson credited legend, Sandy Williamson, with shaping bodybuilding culture during an interview. Clawson highlighted Williamson’s role as a mentor and pioneer for women throughout the fitness industry.

The head judge credits Williamson with shaping not only athletes’ careers, but the culture of the industry itself.

During a recent interview with Beyond the Stage TV, Clawson reflected on Sandy Williamson’s impact on bodybuilding. She described her as someone whose good nature and professionalism have set the standard for generations of judges. Clawson admitted that her admiration for Williamson began long before becoming a judge herself.

Clawson said, "She judged me, and I remember how she made me feel on stage, and I said from the very first time I judged, this is what I want to bring to another athlete's experience. This is how I want to be viewed as a judge. This is who I want to be."

Clawson also highlighted that Williamson’s reputation extends beyond being a head judge. Within the bodybuilding community, she is recognized as a mentor who has guided countless athletes, officials, and industry professionals throughout the years.

According to Clawson, Williamson has been a champion for women's empowerment and has been encouraging women to pursue leadership roles across every area of the industry.

"She's also encouraged women to not only be judges or athletes, but get involved as coaches or trainers, or be a suit designer, or get involved with the supplement line. She is the first to encourage women and promote women."

  • For athletes having trouble getting started, “Go to your local shows. Go see regional shows. It will give you an idea of the process. Anything that you can do ahead of time to relieve some of that anxiety and stress when you first walk in, you should.”
  • According to her, seminars are a great way to get more knowledge about the sport. “Almost every place in our country, every state, holds seminars and workshops. Go hit some of them up. Get some feedback and tips from the pros and officials in your area.”
  • And once you reach the stage, “Presentation has become such a big deal. It’s become so much more important now than it was 15 or 20 years ago.
