Local Talent Steals the Spotlight at the Arnold Classic Event
A fifth-place finish at the 2025 Arnold Classic felt like a world championship for Charlie Dougher. The local strongman's journey of overcoming self-doubt and personal struggles has captured the spotlight, proving that victory isn't always about the podium.
Dougher, who went through a tough time due to personal struggles, recently appeared at the Arnold Classic and competed in the nearly 200 lbs weight class.
The former Lakeland High School athlete shared the event details on his Instagram on March 15 with the caption:
“Arnold World Championship recap. 5th place Max 13" dead- 595 and the ugliest 625 ever 🤣. Dumbbell/log medley- 153,255,172,295 missed the last log”. Some other details of Dougher from the event include:
- Frame carries 40/40- 605 lbs, 14.7 seconds
- Arm over arm- too light but an event win
- Loading medley- unsure of weights.
- Axle press- 265 5 reps
- Duckwalk/powerstairs- 400 and 460.
The 36-year-old Scott Twp resident surpassed his goal, completed the second day of the event, and finished in fifth place.
In the post, he added, “Probably the happiest 5th place finisher ever 🤣. There was so much self-doubt that I didn't belong on a stage like this, but I proved myself wrong.
Competing here was a bucket list comp, and I don't have the words to truly explain what this meant to me. It definitely lit a fire for the future. Thank you to every volunteer that made this weekend what it was. Shows can't able to be done without them, so hats off to everyone of you”.
According to the Times-Tribune, after the competition, he said that appearing at the Arnold Classic improved his mental strength and his body. He said, “I have a completely different outlook on life. My performance at the Arnold completely showed me that I belong in this sport. It’s unbelievable the doors this has opened up for me”.
“It has easily been the best thing for me,” Dougher said. “It develops my mental strength as well as my body. I have a completely different outlook on life. My performance at the Arnold completely showed me that I belong in this sport. It’s unbelievable the doors this has opened up for me," he added.
On the first day, Dougher competed against over 20 athletes, and the top 6, including Dougher, moved on to the second day.
So, on the second day, Dougher had a time of 36.66 seconds for 3 objects in the odd object load. Overall points for him were 19.
Dillon Thompson secured first place in the competition with 35 points. Jose Gregorio placed second with 30 points. Alfredo Tatum finished third with 24 points, Andrew Pepiot came in fourth with 21 points, and Heitor Alves secured sixth place with 18 points.
Charlie Dougher’s preparation for the Arnold Classic 2026
Dougher's preparation was intense, as strongman events test both mental and physical limits.
According to the Times-Tribune, he said, “It can be brutal at times. We train hard for 12 weeks for preparation for the contests. At first, it is not too terrible pushing weights, but it is demanding.
"I would do tree work before that, so my day is physically demanding. Then, I would go and hit the gym," he added. Dougher dedicated his 6 years to reach this position.
He also faced some health issues. For instance, he had a back injury in which several discs herniated.
But he said, “I did not have any surgeries. I recovered through physical therapy. My coach had an issue like this. He knew how to develop a program. I told myself I would give it another go”.
Despite the challenges, Dougher has found his passion.
