Meet Joe De Leo, the hundred-year-old still Lifting Weights Five Days a Week
At a hundred years old, Joe De Leo is doing something that average people who are half his age struggle to stay consistent with. An Instagram post from @waitalians brought Leo to the limelight, highlighting the gentleman’s fitness levels at this age.
What struck people the most was the fact that De Leo was not training this hard for a competition. His mindset is simple. The aim isn’t to break any world records or become social media famous. He lifts because he enjoys it.
"I just love it. I just love it," he said during an interview with Fox 13 News.
De Leo’s fitness levels are unmatched. Most people would be hard-pressed to find a regular fitness enthusiast who could do as many reps as he can.
"Did you see me there? I did 300. I could do 400,” he says, as he completes 300 reps with ease.
While most of us can barely make it to the gym three days a week, Leo works out every day for three hours, from 7 am to 10 am. His go-to place for years has been Planet Fitness in Spring Hill. Moreover, most other gym members enjoy his company and expect to see him there every day.
What We Can Learn From Joe De Leo’s Secrets to Longevity
De Leo’s is a simple story- a reminder of the importance of consistency. According to Mayo Clinic, people should strength train at least two times a week. The rest of the days can be focused on other exercises such as yoga, cardio, core stability, flexibility, and mobility movements, etc.
Moreover, Leo knows that it is important not to overtrain, a concept that has become quite common among modern fitness influencers.
De Leo’s food habits are also quite basic. He loves eating ham sandwiches and two hard-boiled eggs daily. Of course, he treats himself to a lemon pie once every week as a cheat meal. When cooking one of his favorite meals, pasta, he uses extra-virgin olive oil to make it healthier.
Finally, he recommends having a good woman in your life who doesn’t give you ‘agita,’ the Italian-American word for stress or aggravation.
It is a simple but powerful story of how consistency, minimalism, and staying happy can help you live a long, healthy life.
