Mindy Kaling reveals the reason behind her 40-pound weight loss transformation

Mindy Kaling is making a buzz online due to her massive weight loss of around 40 pounds. But she has made it clear that the weight loss is hardly for any aesthetic or Hollywood reasons.

In an interview published on May 19, the multitalented lady shared the personal motivation that runs deep behind her transformation. It is because she wants to live longer.

"I want to live at least 20 more years for my children," she told Hola. "I just am really, for the first time in my life, trying moderation, and I love it," she said in a 2025 interview with Today. Her mindset has shifted over the years.

The 46-year-old is the mother of 3 children: daughter Katherine, 8; son Spencer, 5; and daughter Anne, 2. Now she no longer wants to lose weight just because of how she would look; she is taking fitness seriously.

"When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons," she told Bustle. "Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes."

Kaling revealed that diabetes runs heavily in her family — on both sides. "I had it on both sides of my family, and trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me," she said. "And that's my goal."

From vanity to longevity, Kaling has set her priorities straight, and for that, she has been consistently working out and maintaining a perfect diet.

Mindy Kaling lost 40 pounds, here's exactly how she eats and trains

Mindy Kaling has a personal trainer because she understands that it is best to take fitness advice from experts. "I do about five exercises, and I don't make it fun," she shared.

"I do my squats, my Romanian deadlifts, and my lunges. Then I have a routine of arm exercises — upright rows, the regular bicep curls, the Arnold press, and a lot of pushups." She told AOL.

Kaling also dedicates a substantial amount of time to walking 3-5 miles every morning. "If I have a stressful conversation with someone and we can do it while we're walking, there's something about the mechanics of my body and my blood flow that makes it better," she explained.

And despite calling planks "boring," she can hold the position for two minutes.

Kaling told Parade in 2025 that she had significantly cleaned up her diet. "I'm in my protein era, but I'm also in my trying-not-to-have-high-cholesterol era. "

"I'd love nothing more than to eat steak all day, but I've been trying to get protein from pea protein, tofu, and chicken, which isn't always the most fun, but I've been somewhat successful."

Vegetables have also become a staple. "I love vegetables — I eat cooked vegetables all day," she said. "I also have a bowl of blueberries every day. I hear they have fiber," Mindy told Yahoo.
