Based on data from the Cleveland Clinic.

According to the American Heart Association, one must engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity weekly.

But considering busy schedules, finding enough time to work out may be difficult. That's why we're looking at whether working out early in the morning or at night helps you.

Cardiologist Erik Van Iterson said, “For most of us who want to exercise for general health effects, the best time is the time that works best for your lifestyle and allows you to perform it regularly”.

Morning Workout

An early workout is ideal for those who like to kick-start their day with more focus and energy. Working out in the morning helps build a strong routine because there are fewer distractions.

Pros of working out in the morning

  • Helps in building a habit of regular workouts.
  • Improves resting metabolic rate.
  • Builds mental focus and enhances mood.
  • It also helps improve sleep patterns.
  • Boost metabolism and help in weight control and appetite management.

Cons of working out in the morning

  • Office and college timings can impact and limit the workout timing.
  • Some people are less energetic in the morning, which hinders the effectiveness of the training and can also reduce their motivation.
  • Muscles may feel stiff after waking up, which can influence training.
  • Stomach discomfort occurs when eating too close to workout time, and, at the same time, empty-stomach training is not advisable for everyone.

One must wake up early to avoid rushing and make sure to prep workout clothes and the gym bag the night before. Before working out, eat something light and include a proper warm-up to avoid injury.

Evening workout

This workout timing is best for those who feel more energetic and active in the evening. After completing all daily responsibilities, one can train their body with a relaxed, peaceful mind.

Advantages of evening workout

  • In the evening, the body naturally warms up and becomes more flexible.
  • It can act as a stress reliever after a long day at the office or college.
  • Evening workouts often feel less rushed, as daily chores are typically complete.
  • Provide an opportunity to socialize with friends and join group classes or workout sessions, which ultimately builds motivation.

Disadvantages of evening workout

  • An evening workout can hinder sleep if performed too late.
  • Sometimes a training schedule can clash with other plans, such as a family dining out plan.
  • One can feel too tired after a busy workday at the office, which reduces motivation to work out.
  • Tiredness after a full day makes maintaining consistency harder.

It is advisable to complete the training session at least 1 hour before sleep, and to avoid vigorous training in the evening, as it might hinder sleep.

Which One Should You Choose?

There is no single best time for training for everybody. Both evening and morning workouts offer their own benefits and drawbacks.

The important thing is to choose the one that fits your daily routine. One must try both first, then decide, and stay consistent to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Because consistency matters the most, not the clock.
