NBA star Matthew Dellavedova reveals AI fitness secret
Matthew Dellavedova has a new coaching staff, and it's not even human! The former NBA champion revealed this week that artificial intelligence has become a central part of his offseason transformation, crediting tools like ChatGPT and Claude for helping him drop roughly 15 pounds at age 35, while getting his vertical back to the point where he's dunking again.
“My best use case of AI so far. A personal 24/7 nutritionist that knows my training and goals and can adjust on the fly. Using ChatGPT (@openai ) and (@claudeai ) has been incredible for @athleticventures: research, planning, and executing, but the biggest impact this offseason has been planning out every meal and giving options when plans change (dad life) and still be able to make good choices,” stated the caption of the post on Instagram last week.
Dellavedova, the Australian guard best known for his championship run with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is chasing a return to international competition. He's set his sights on representing Australia at both the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics, and this offseason overhaul appears to be a major piece of that plan.

The Instagram post breaking down his transformation didn't stop at weight loss. Dellavedova said his resting heart rate during sleep dropped by nine beats per minute over the same stretch, a sign of improved conditioning to go along with the visible physical changes.
Some of the specific adjustments Dellavedova credited to AI included eating more carbohydrates ahead of training sessions, trimming portions later in the day, and syncing his calorie intake to match how demanding each day's workload actually was rather than eating the same amount regardless of activity level. He even used it to snap photos of restaurant menus and get recommendations that lined up with his goals on the road.
Whether more athletes follow his lead remains to be seen, but Dellavedova's willingness to publicly credit AI has already made his transformation one of the more talked-about stories of the NBA offseason.
Dellavedova reveals the dietary addition that improved his game
Matthew Dellavedova has always leaned on diet to stay ahead of the competition, and he found another edge back during his NBL24 season.
The veteran guard has long been open about his love of steaks and avocado, staples that became well known during his standout Blitz performance that year. But Dellavedova revealed to ESPN he'd added something new to the mix: oysters.
"It's just got a lot of good stuff in it," Dellavedova said. "Some things I do a deep dive on."
His approach to nutrition isn't overly complicated. Some choices come down to research, while others are simply based on how his body responds.
At 35 years old at the time, Dellavedova was in some of the best form of his NBL career, suggesting whatever he's doing with his diet is working.
