NFL stars join strongman and CrossFit at Open Lane experience

The worlds of football and fitness have collided in the best way possible. Last week, some of the top athletes from multiple disciplines joined for a training camp under the banner of fraternity, keeping it real in the gym.

The Open Lane Experience, hosted by Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson and strength coach Tony Rooks of Rooks Performance, brought together NFL stars, strongman maestros, CrossFit athletes, and even culinary experts.

The event, which kicked off on June 23 in a quiet subterranean craft cocktail lounge in Oklahoma, was packed with intense physical conditioning, functional mobility training, heavy lifts, and strategy sessions with some of the sport's top minds.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs joined the week-long experience, alongside 6x CrossFit athlete Joshua Bridges, strongman Mitchell Hooper, and Hall of Famer Joe Thomas. Men's Health columnist Ebenezer Samuel also joined the crew.

As posted by the NFL's official Instagram page, the day began with a cardio and plyometric workout on the fields before pivoting to the mouth-watering wagyu beef seared hot off the grill. The team also enjoyed a golf session in the afternoon.

However, the event's prime focus remained fostering a sense of community, bonding over ball-pass drills and heavy bench presses. As Johnson wrote, it was less about the hype that comes from star crossovers and more about "building a brotherhood through the grind."

This event marks one of the many changes Lane Johnson has embraced to prepare for his 2026 season.

Lane Johnson clears the air on his offseason recalibrations

A devastating foot injury against the Detroit Lions in Week 11 of the 2025 season sidelined Lane Johnson from the final stretch of the Philadelphia Eagles' campaign. Many wondered whether the 36-year-old was on the verge of hanging up his boots.

Much to fans' surprise, Johnson committed to his 14th NFL season. However, his return comes with numerous intentional offseason changes in his training.

That begins with introducing Chris Kuper to the coaching staff, even though Johnson trained under one offensive coach throughout his career.

"Coach Kuper played for lots of years in the league. So, not only coming to me as a coach but as a player, I got a lot of respect for him," Johnson told the press as per the Philadelphia Eagles' website.

Moreover, he noted, Johnson will now have a guard to help him on the field. The overall run game of the offense has also been leveled up.

The season takes off for the Philadelphia Eagles on August 15 this year against the Baltimore Ravens. And Johnson is not taking the game lightly.

After all, what matters the most for the 36-year-old offensive lineman is to "finish on a strong note." So, are you rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles this year? Let us know in the comments.
