How many 100-year-olds do you know who can lift weights with ease? Here is one who will blow your mind.
103-year-old Roy Caldwood, who served as a combat medic in the African American regiment of the 92nd Infantry Division, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers, is turning heads as he does something that most people half or one-third his age would find challenging: working out and building strength.
In a recent Instagram post uploaded by the WWII Veterans History Project, Private First Class Caldwood was seen lifting weights perfectly. With a pair of dumbbells and a zeal to stay fit, he challenges the narrative surrounding old age.
In the video, when WWIIVHP founder Ben Mack-Jackson asked the Buffalo Soldier how many times a week he works out, Caldwood said:
"I go to the gym once a week, and I prepare for the gym here [in his home], so when I go, I'm ready for 'em." While putting the weights down, the WWII veteran even made a cheeky joke about his age:
"I used to be very good, I'm not that good now, I'm working up to it. Eventually, by the time I see you guys again, I'll be back in shape."
During his service, Roy Caldwood was deployed to Italy, where his regiment faced the Germans as part of the Allied effort. After retiring from the Army, he worked for New York City's prison system, rising to the rank of assistant deputy warden.
Legends Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lee Haney praise Roy Caldwood
The video of the Buffalo Soldier garnered immense praise from fans all over. People were blown away by the veteran's fitness level at a ripe age of 103. Comments like "This is amazing," and "He looks excellent, still working on his goals" were showered all over the comment section.
But the ultimate stamp of approval came when the praise came from the ultimate authority on fitness and health. Bodybuilding legends 7x Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger and 8x Mr. Olympia Lee Haney showed their support to the veteran.
Schwarzenegger liked the video, and Lee Haney commented, "My Hero!!! Absolutely amazing. Thank you, sir."
