Overachiever’ Jay Cutler Gets Honest on Being Different Than Most Bodybuilders With a Shredded Physique at 52
Jay Cutler’s legacy in bodybuilding is cemented by his four Mr Olympia titles (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010), a feat earned during one of the most competitive eras the sport has ever seen. Few athletes have had to battle legends on both sides of their careers. On one end was Ronnie Coleman, the eight-time champion whose dominance seemed unbreakable. On the other hand was Phil Heath, the genetically blessed man who went on to claim seven titles of his own.
Cutler stood between two dynasties and still carved out his own. And even now, long after retiring from professional competition, Jay Cutler remains one of the few champions who still looks stage-ready at 52.
So what keeps him sharp when so many former pros fade away? That’s exactly what he opened up about just days ago.
The Mindset Behind Jay’s Discipline in his own words
About three days ago, Jay Cutler appeared on the Unwracked Podcast on YouTube with host Andrew Berry and co-host Kyle Wilkes. During their conversation, Andrew pushed Jay with a question that many fans have wondered:
“We see so many retired pros let their physiques go. What is different about you, Jay?”
Jay smiled and replied with:
“I’m an overachiever.”
He explained that anyone at the top of the fitness world can relate to that mindset. But for him, it didn’t start with bodybuilding started long before.
Jay shared that he began working in his brother’s concrete business at age 11. Before school, after school, and during vacations worked. There was no option for rest, no room for excuses.
“I was forced to get up early, work all day, and stay disciplined. That concrete job gave me structure. I didn’t have time for relaxation or fun. It taught me to zone everything out and commit fully to a task.”
That same ability to lock in, to focus regardless of fatigue or emotion, became the foundation of his bodybuilding success and the reason he still maintains such a sharp physique decades later.
Before Jay Cutler ever touched a barbell, he had heroes like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Sylvester Stallone, icons who inspired him to chase the sheer love for bodybuilding and the passion he has for it.
At 52, Jay Cutler remains shredded not because he has something to prove but because he has always been an overachiever. And in his own words, he never learned how to be anything else.
