Patrick Mahomes’ Workout: The Fitness Rules That Define the NFL Star QB’s Athleticism Across the Years

Patrick Mahomes' on-field magic is built on a foundation of intense, year-round training.
Two-time NFL MVP (2018, 2022), former NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 10,000, 20,000, and 25,000 passing yards, these are the credentials Patrick Mahomes holds. And reaching this level demands structured, high-intensity training. Here’s how he trains.

“Medicine ball training is so important to Patrick’s regimen because he likes to produce power for multiple different angles in the way that he plays the position of quarterback,” Bobby Stroupe, the man who has trained Mahomes since the fourth grade.
His workout revolves around functional strength, which is why Bobby trains him a bit differently.
Medicine Ball Power Work
- Sit-Up Med Ball Throw = 3 × 3
- Granny Toss = 3 × 2
- Shot Put Throw = 3 × 3 each side
- Partner Pass Rainbow Slam = 3 × 2 each direction
Track & Field Conditioning
- Single-Leg Broad Jump = 2 × 3 per leg
- Hurdle Bounds = 3 × 15 yards
- Sled Push = 3 × 15 yards
- Backward Sled Pull = 3 × 15 yards
- Lateral Sled Drag = 3 × 15 yards
- Get-Up Sprints = 3 × 10 yards
- Cone Speed Drill = 2 rounds (3 cones)
Strength & Isometric Training
- Front-Foot Elevated Split Squat = 4 × 5 per leg
- 3-Point Isometric Pull-Up Hold = 4 × 6 seconds
- Overcoming Isometric Deadlift = 3 × 30-second holds
- Cable Push-Pull = 3 × 5 reps each direction
- Weighted Hip Thrust = 3 × 5 with pause at the top
During the season, Mahomes follows the Chiefs’ strength and conditioning program, but he still trains with Stroupe at least three times a week, adding roughly 10–12 hours of additional work
How does his Season camp look?
His Chiefs training kicks off with mobility-focused drills and targeted soft-tissue work. From there, the session shifts into explosive movements like jumps, hops, swings, throws, and sprints. In addition, he trains with Bobby, and this rigorous routine has also led to injuries.
During the 2022–23 playoffs, he suffered a high-ankle sprain. His training shifted to controlled mobility, stability, and strength training, limiting high-impact work while maintaining conditioning. The approach helped him return quickly and perform through the Super Bowl.
Mahomes has an experienced medical team on standby to take care of those. “There are some days you’re going to be sore or some days you’re going to feel stiff, but you have to have someone you trust that’s going to get the best out of you, that’s going to keep you safeand someone that’s going to push you more than anything,” Patrick Mahomes revealed on Assistant Athletic Trainer Julie Frymyer.
With the season starting soon, Mahomes will be looking to maintain his dominance.
