Phil Heath reveals why he intentionally lost 30 pounds and stayed at 250

Seven-time Mr. Olympia Phil Heath maintained massive volume throughout his career, reaching nearly 280 lbs during the off-season. Years later, the bodybuilder revealed what drove his post-retirement weight-loss decision.

"THAT TIME in 2021 when I lost 30 pounds on purpose. I wanted to challenge my body in a different way and see how it would respond," Heath wrote in an Instagram post dated July 24.

The results speak for themselves. Alongside multiple pictures from the gym, the Mr. Olympia great added, "I’ve maintained around 250 pounds ever since, and it’s become a weight where I feel my best."

Heath explained in his Instagram post that the weight loss reflected a broader shift in priorities after retirement, with long-term health and personal fulfillment replacing the demands of competitive bodybuilding.

Taking to Instagram earlier this year in April, the bodybuilding legend explained how retirement led him to train just for himself. Heath traded the applause of the Olympia stage for the "truth in the mirror."

After a severe abdominal injury, Heath competed for the last time in December 2020. He chose to prioritize his personal growth and longevity above everything else.

Phil Heath isn't the only bodybuilder to discover that less is more after retirement. Many other icons have walked down a similar path.

Why bodybuilders are downsizing after stepping away from the stage

Phil Heath's post-retirement fitness outlook reflects a growing trend among bodybuilding greats like Jay Cutler and Dorian Yates, who are choosing longevity over their extreme physiques.

Pro bodybuilder Jay Cutler, who tipped the scales at nearly 275 lbs during his competitive years, shared in a June 2025 YouTube video how downsizing remained one of his top fitness goals that year.

"I want to feel athletic if that makes sense," said Cutler via his YouTube video. "52 in August this year, so just trying to keep my health the most proactive thing. I always talked about the longevity."

In another YouTube video the following month, Cutler shared a glimpse at his training strategy, including fasted cardio.

As Cutler further added in the video, Dexter Jackson, Dorian Yates, and Rich Gaspari are other names who have adopted a similar approach, much like Phil Heath.

Heath's decision to maintain a lighter physique reflects a broader shift among retired bodybuilding champions, many of whom now prioritize long-term health and mobility over carrying extreme off-season size.
