When a noted bodubuilder like Nick Walker says that trying to stay in the best shape all the time is a mistake, fans do take notice. But Walker's comments also might shock many, given his appreciable aesthetics.
In an Instagram reel on January 9, the sixth-place finisher at Mr. Olympia 2025 mentioned that the "prep" period for competitions is indeed a challenging time for bodybuilders. He emphasized the point that even professionals don't need to go through such testing "preps" to stay super-lean all the time.
"If you’re in prep, you know, four to six weeks out, the odds are you’re not happy-go-lucky [due to the intensity]. But if you’re [doing that] in everyday life, you’re kinda acting like a d***** because you want to stay lean all of the time, you know, you should probably check yourself."
Walker also opined on why some might need to stay lean all year. According to him, most do it for the "views," and because of the harsh training involved, they become bitter and unlikeable in real life.
He also realized that the intense training before competitions often leads to some roughness in character. However, the 31-year-old wished for a reality check for those who behave rudely just because of their heavy workouts to stay lean for the views.
"I do believe, four to six weeks out, if you’re a little bit of a d****. That's okay. We get it. Not a problem. We understand the lifestyle. But if you’re like that when you don’t even compete, you need a reality check, like, a big one."
With that warning message delivered, he also reflected on his renewed approach and mindset in another Instagram post as he prepares for the 2026 Arnold Classic.
Nick Walker's mindset for the Arnold Classic
Walker may have highlighted the adverse effects of trying to stay lean all year. However, he doesn't care about anything when it comes to a competition.
With the coveted Arnold Classic 2026 just about two months away. He voiced a quote to keep himself and others motivated.
The 31-year-old said, “If there is anyone feeling some sort of way, feeling like they can’t find that groove or confidence within themselves, one thing I will say is don’t stop trusting yourself, no one knows yourself better than you do, no one knows what’s best for you better than you do, believe in yourself and trust your gut."
Walker bagged first place in the coveted contest in 2021. Now, it remains to be seen if his motivation can lead him to another Arnold Classic victory.
