Ryan Terry shares 5-year comeback to men's physique olympia

Men’s Physique star Ryan Terry is known not only for his classic beach-body aesthetic but also for his wavering consistency on the Olympia stage. A devastating torn hip labrum and three surgeries later, Terry fought through a five-year comeback to write one of bodybuilding’s most inspiring comeback stories.

A viral Instagram post shared by Terry on July 13 instantly gained traction online, racking up over 6.8K likes. The post highlighted the various physical injuries and struggles Terry went through, ultimately derailing his 2018 Men’s Physique Olympia title dreams.

“5 years. 3 surgeries. 1 goal that never changed. I didn't get there in spite of 2018. I got there because of how I responded to it,” a part of his Instagram caption said.

However, five years of intense rehabilitation later, Terry finally achieved his ambition, leading to his first Men’s Physique Olympia victory in 2023.

Terry’s message is simple- no matter what setbacks and adversities you face, just keep going.

“If you're in your version of that setback right now, hurt, delayed, watching someone else get the thing you wanted, this is your reminder. The timeline isn't the story. What you do with it is. Keep going. 💪,” he said in the Instagram post caption.

Terry captured the 2023 Men’s Physique Olympia title, a long-standing dream, dethroning Erin Banks and three-time champion Brandon Hendrickson.

His remarkable comeback was built on years of hard work, disciplined training, and perseverance in the gym.

How Ryan Terry built his body to win the 2023 Olympia title

Terry’s incredible Mr. Olympia physique was not built overnight. Years of relentless hard work, even through multiple injuries and setbacks, helped him build his coveted physique.

During an interview with Train magazine, Terry revealed that he does fasted cardio every single morning before breakfast for an hour, seven days a week, without fail.

However, he weight trains only six days a week, working on a single muscle part per day. Moreover, he follows a five-day bodybuilding split, adding a sixth day to work on a muscle group he thinks might need more attention.

His typical weekly workout looked like this-

Monday – back

Tuesday – arms or abs

Wednesday – quads

Thursday – shoulders

Friday – chest or abs

Saturday - hamstrings or calves

Sunday – rest and recovery

However, he admitted that even Sundays are not complete rest days for him.

“On my rest day, I like to call it an active rest day, though, so it’s not completely doing nothing; it’s something you enjoy doing out of the gym,” he said.

For Terry, training was never a chore but a pleasure and passion, which is why he never felt the need to skip gym day.

How do you spend your rest days? Do you enjoy some sort of light activity outside the gym, or do you prefer relaxing?
