Sarah Marie Bell on Choosing the Right Spotter

For fitness trainer Sarah Marie Bell, getting the right person to spot her is a crucial decision. Her latest advice reveals why choosing the wrong person could be a big mistake.
Bell, who often shares titbits of advice for her followers, took to Instagram to explain why it is important to have a good spotter, and the lengths she goes to find the person in the gym.
"For success in your lifts and progress in your training, get a good spotter. Choose them well, this person can be the key to move forward, or go backwards, or even cause an injury," Sarah Marie Bell said on her February 22 Instagram post.
Bell explained that it matters even more on certain risky lifts. "When you want to find a person to spot you for an exercise like bench press, it's so hard to find the right person," said the bodybuilder.
"Either they spot you in the wrong place. They spot you too much. They don't spot you enough," added the fitness coach. That's because to spot you right, the person on the other end needs to be an experienced lifter as well.
Citing her own example, she joked, "I'm super, super picky, so I will stand here maybe [for] half an hour [and] miss my set, because I don't have any good to spot me." Yet, there's another element that Bell believes is just as crucial for a successful lift.
Why Sarah Marie Bell Prioritizes Warm-Ups
Bell explained the importance of the right warm-up routine on her February 18 Instagram reel.
"Warm up with purpose—start from zero (or a few light sets) and build up using the exact same form you’ll use on your top set. Every rep should look like your max rep," she captioned the post.
In the reel, Sarah Marie Bell explained why in the reel. "It is essential for priming your nervous system and to get the body ready for the massive load it is about to take [in the working set]," she added.
It's useful information like that that's earned the fitness influencer over 150k followers on Instagram. Yet, what's your take on spotting in the gym? Tell us in the comments.
