Scott Eastwood discusses why chasing fitness aesthetics can hurt your health

During a Men’s Health magazine podcast, Suicide Squad actor Scott Eastwood recently talked about how focusing only on aesthetic fitness can be a common mistake. He believes that those who focus on appearance, like big muscles or abs, often miss out on the most important thing: long-term health.

Eastwood shares his personal experiences of feeling stiffness after doing ‘too much weights’ and how he tries to find a healthy balance. Of course, he admits to the importance of weight training, especially with age. However, Eastwood adds that people should also focus on flexibility and mobility along with it.

“I think if you get too focused on aesthetics, you will suffer because you’re focused on the aesthetic of being healthy instead of having flexibility, having the longevity, you know?” he says with a chuckle.

Eastwood's stance is supported by research published in the National Library of Medicine, which states that people who exercise for intrinsic goals, such as health and skill development, have better well-being than those motivated by extrinsic goals, like appearance and image.

“I do say, when I do too much weights, my body seizes, like really tightens up. And so, I’m kind of like always trying to find that balance of doing weights,” he added.

According to Eastwood, the right kind of fitness should make you feel strong, healthy, and able. While it is okay to try to work towards a certain physique or aesthetic, it shouldn’t be done at the cost of long-term health and wellness.

His fitness philosophy is reflected in the training routine that he has designed around strength, flexibility, and long-term health.

Inside Scott Eastwood’s formula for long-term fitness

According to a recent Men’s Health interview, Eastwood follows a well-rounded fitness approach rather than focusing on a single exercise type. His fitness routine includes yoga, swimming, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, and weight training.

He emphasizes the importance of maintaining mobility and flexibility, especially with age.

Furthermore, Eastwood doesn’t simply rely on the gym for his fitness goals. Along with regular weight training, he also enjoys martial arts, swimming, surfing, and stretching.

He further goes on to explain how he engages in recovery practices such as cold plunges and sauna sessions. He often talks about the importance of yoga and stretching in his fitness routine.

“Yoga changed my life,” he revealed, crediting it to his physical flexibility as well as his mental well-being. He shares how he engages in at least 10 minutes of yoga or stretching every day, along with following a customized fitness plan.

This includes-

  • 10 minutes of skipping
  • Squat to curl presses
  • Renegade rows
  • Push-up knee tucks
  • 50-meter wind sprints
  • Hammer curls (till failure)
  • Medicine ball crunches

What do you think of Eastwood’s approach to physical and mental fitness? Do you believe that more and more people are now focused on aesthetic fitness instead of long-term health?
