Serge Pizzorno Shares How Running Changed His Fitness Habits

Did you know that the man who penned the S**** the Runner is himself a runner? Serge Pizzorno, who once despised gym-goers, now obsesses over carbon-plate shoes and marathon splits. Let's find out.

According to Men's Health, Pizzorno says his habit changed in 2020, when the singer became Kasabian's frontman. The band was formed in 1997. At that time, he realized that something had to change and that he needed to improve his health and fitness.

He said, “I used to despise anyone that was keeping fit. If any of the bands on tour were in the gym, I’d be sat in the bar saying, come and have a d**** with us.” However, one day he realized the importance of health and said, “I knew there was no way that I could live the life I'd been living and perform my best on stage."

As Pizzorno kept running, the singer gradually adopted it, and the training culture and his habits began to change. Pizzorno said, “Then slowly but surely the carbon plates come, Strava comes. I'm starting to look at HRV and how's my cadence? It's slowly but surely captured me, and I'm just out now.”

"I'm here. I'm ready. And it's been a really beautiful thing. I'm not scared anymore, man.”

But to keep the interest from becoming an ad*****on, the singer limits himself to an effectively set weekly routine.

Pizzorno said, “Three runs a week is a really nice place to be. I try to do an interval run, a tempo, and long on a Sunday."

Apart from that, running is now an integral part of the star’s preparation for live performance, and Pizzorno adjusted his training while on tour.

He said, “Running is a way of preparing for that, and when I'm on tour, I run a lot less. I still like to get out, but just half an hour, super slow and on a day off – not before a show."

Pizzorno’s love for running becomes so intense that he fully embraces the lifestyle that once seemed impossible. Currently, Pizzorno prefers running gear and says, "I'm a gearhead. I love the gear... Once the shoes went carbon – I love the style of them and the science behind it."

From someone who openly admitted to despising people who used to be fit to someone who has completed full marathons in Florence and Copenhagen and holds a personal best of 4:05, the story tells of dedication.

Although running has helped him stay fit, what is next for Pizzorno?

Serge Pizzorno’s next goal

Pizzorno’s goal is to run a sub-3:30 marathon. The Kasabian was not happy after finishing his 4:05 marathon because he knew he could do better. However, the motivation he draws on comes from his wife. Pizzorno said,

“My wife Amy is my running inspiration. She’s unbelievable. She took it up around the same time as me and now has an England Masters vest as a V40. She’s going for a Championship time for the London Marathon. She ran 3:10:03 in Florence last year – three seconds short!”

So, Pizzorno continues to focus on his dream of a sub-3:30 marathon, and this journey highlights that it's never too late to start something new or transform your mindset.
