Even before CGI and padded suits became a thing, Hollywood relied on real muscle power for its movies. No actors were pretending to be bodybuilders. Instead, elite bodybuilders, whose physiques had already earned respect on the competitive stage.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s name echoes around the world as one of the greatest figures in bodybuilding history. Beyond the sport, he also established himself as a Hollywood icon.

He began his film career with Hercules in New York in 1970, before achieving mainstream success with Conan the Barbarian. To date, Schwarzenegger has appeared in over 50 films, with The Terminator widely regarded as his most iconic role.

Steve Reeves

A lesser-known figure in the world of bodybuilding, his life story could be a movie in itself. After returning from the Philippines following World War II, he pursued acting while continuing to compete in bodybuilding. His acting gigs clicked, and he went on to appear in 17 films.

Dwayne Johnson

He started his film career with The Mummy Returns in 2001, and the name ‘The Rock’ has been echoing across Hollywood ever since. However, even before his acting and wrestling gigs, The Rock began as a bodybuilder. Although he never fully pursued bodybuilding, it laid the foundation for both his wrestling and acting careers.

Ralf Moeller

Wildly recognized for playing Brick Bardo in Cyborg, Kjartan in The Viking Sagas, and appearances in Conan the Adventurer, Ralf Moeller left his mark on the silver screens after spending years inside the gym. That’s not all, he even played standout roles as Hagen in Gladiator, Thorak in The Scorpion King, and Ulfar in Pathfinder.

John Cena

“You Can’t See Me.” This phrase by John Cena was so widely popular all across the world that after his WWE career, Hollywood couldn’t let him slip away. The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, Fast & Furious 9, and several other films he has acted in have gone on to break records.

Dave Bautista

Another famed individual from the WWE who made it big on the streets of Hollywood is Dave Bautista. Known for his rivalry with John Cena, he followed him to the silver screen as well. From grabbing a role in the MCU as Drax to playing standout parts in Dune and Blade Runner 2049, his versatility speaks for itself.

Sylvester Stallone

Arguably the biggest action star of all time, the Rocky sensation became such a massive name that his presence alone could boost box office numbers. But even before his acting journey began, Stallone was heavily inspired by bodybuilding and martial arts to build his career.
