7-Time Mr. Olympia Phil Heath reflects on life beyond the stage

Phil Heath is a bodybuilding legend, stringing together seven back-to-back Mr. Olympia wins in an unscathed reign from 2011 to 2017. Now, away from the competition heat, Heath has traded the spotlight for a quieter chapter of his life.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, July 10, the retired bodybuilder reflected on the true meaning of success, valuing the journey over the accolades in his career.

"We spend so much of life chasing the next mountain that we rarely stop to appreciate the climb behind us," the Olympia great wrote in the caption, posting some old snaps of his shredded physique.

Boasting an extensive fitness pedigree himself, Heath believes that his greatest victories were the ones that happened away from the crowd and "the quiet choices that forged my character."

"Some chapters are too heavy for words. I’ve always preferred to let the work speak," Heath concluded.

However, some choices tested his resolve more than others. His decision to retire was one of them. After a disappointing loss in 2018 owing to a distended gut and a final comeback in 2020, Heath finally turned the page.

"I didn't want to retire. I didn't choose to walk away from what I loved," Heath had shared. However, a double abdominal hernia affected his midsection, making it "impossible for the judges to ignore."

Although it was a tough choice, it ultimately helped Heath to reassess his life beyond the stage. That retirement came with certain challenging personal discoveries.

Phil Heath got candid about his struggles with body dysmorphia

Dealing with knee and shoulder injuries, Phil Heath, also known as "The Gift," had a difficult 2024. Rehab forced him to hit pause on his training, leading to a much less defined physique. That turned out to be a breeding ground for insecurities.

Always daringly vulnerable, Heath posted an Instagram reel of himself working out in his unfinished gym, despite not feeling his best.

"I’m not feeling like myself, and didn’t even want to post because my body dysmorphia was like, ‘bro, you’re small af’," the confession read.

However, Heath understands that embracing insecurities is the key to a healthy self-dialogue and the stepping stone towards personal growth. For others facing similar issues, Heath offered some wisdom from his own journey, adding:

"Fact is, we all have setbacks, and the key is to focus on what you can control! Just know that you’re not alone if you’re struggling!"

Phil Heath is proof that even top athletes can stumble upon setbacks, whether it's on or off the stage. Have you faced a challenge that changed your perspective on life? Tell us your story in the comments.
