Seven U.S. Presidents With the Most Unusual Diet Preferences

Most U.S. presidents are fondly remembered for their oratory skills and historic decisions. However, some are also remembered for their quirky eating habits. While a few stuck to regular staple foods with a personal twist, others opted for something completely outrageous.

Here are some of the most interesting and unusual, head-turning diet preferences that seven U.S. presidents had.

Quirky Food Habits of U.S Presidents

George Washington

While President George Washington did not have a peculiar food choice as such, his way of consuming the item was certainly unusual. He preferred cracking walnuts using his bare teeth- a habit which eventually caused him to lose several teeth. It is believed that the habit came from his simple upbringing in rural Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson

President Jefferson loved his ice cream. While it may not sound peculiar in this day and age, his favorite comfort food existed during a time when freezers hadn’t been invented.

To accommodate his love for ice cream, he created an ice house

Ulysses S. Grant

President Grant’s choice of breakfast was not only odd but also quite dangerous to consume daily. He began his day with a vinegar-soaked cucumber and a cup of black coffee. On retrospection, it might seem that his unusual food habits came from his desire to add some acidic flavor to an otherwise bland diet.

Lyndon B Johnson

President Johnson was unusually fond of carbonated drinks like grapefruit-flavored soda and Coca-Cola. Throughout the day, he reached out for tea, coffee, and other beverages.

Richard Nixon

One of the most peculiar food choices on the list has to be President Nixon’s. After his physician recommended him to include dairy in his diet, Nixon began consuming cottage cheese with ketchup every morning.

He admitted that the addition of ketchup was a habit he picked up from his grandmother.

Gerald Ford

President Ford’s quirky food choice would have a lot of people turning up their noses. However, it is said that he loved to eat strawberries with sour cream- a bold combination of flavors that many might not try.

George H.W Bush

One of the most humorous quirks definitely belonged to President George H.W Bush, who blatantly refused to eat broccoli!

"I do not like broccoli, and I haven't liked it since I was a little kid, and my mother made me eat it. And I'm president of the United States, and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli."

These unusual diet choices are a reminder to regular people that even presidents can have their quirks, making them more relatable. Their odd choices may turn a few heads, but it also gives us an insight into their personalities and history.
