7x Mr. Olympia Phil Heath Explains the Importance of Consistency Over Motivation

Phil Heath turned preacher on Instagram recently and shared his pearls of wisdom. In the midst of posing like he still owned the Olympia stage and flexing his chiseled biceps, the seven-time Mr. Olympia taught a valuable lesson on why consistency matters.

In a long caption that started with, 'Consistency is the closest thing to a superpower,' Heath explained what sets a champion apart from the rest of the world. While most people wait for motivation, champions build habits that don’t need motivation to succeed.

There will be days when a person might feel demotivated, tired, or unsuccessful, and that’s the time not to quit. Stay consistent, and it will lead to success. He continues with, 'Consistency isn’t flashy. It’s repetitive. It’s disciplined. And over time, it becomes undeniable.

Years later, the trophies fade into the background, but the mindset stays forever.'

With seven Sandow trophies under his belt, Phil Heath is a decorated figure in bodybuilding. He has cemented his legacy alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Haney, and Ronnie Coleman. His words were learned through personal experiences filled with countless setbacks and errors.

And although Heath himself gave great advice, he was unfortunately subjected to a very poor one. On April 28, Heath shared a video on Instagram of an interview in which the interviewers asked him about the worst advice he has received in bodybuilding.

The 46-year-old gave a very confident reply, “That if you took s*******, you would be a champion.”

Well, that may be terrible advice, but here are some more of Phil Heath's gems that might help you if you are planning to become a professional bodybuilder.

Top 10 Phil Heath Workout Tips

Greg Marrett once wrote Phil Heath's columns for FLEX magazine, and during that time, he got to listen to some of Heath's workout advice. Here are the top 10 of them:

  • Never try to impress anyone with big weights. The heavier you lift, the greater the risk of injury, so be mindful.
  • Include the machine chest press in your training routine. Find exercises that best suit your physique and best target your muscles.
  • Always be patient. Bodybuilding takes time. Winning a competition takes time. Do not rush for quick results; be consistent and wait for the results.
  • Include High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) in your routine. It is the best way to lose fat.
  • You don't have to do rear squats; instead, you can replace them with single-leg squats, front squats, hack squats, or Smith machine squats.
  • Try Hany Rambod's FST-7 workout.
  • Instead of focusing on the pump, do serious sets with maximum weights for reps in the 8-12 range. Those are enough for growth; you can add the pump later.
  • Perform bicep curls with a machine, aiming for maximum tension in your biceps.
  • Practice until your form is perfect.
  • Work on your back muscles.
