71-Year-Old Grandmother Remains Ripped With HYROX Training

At 71, Debbie Leahy is defying all norms as she ranks fourth in the world in a sport that is getting rapidly popular, known as Hyrox.

Fitness is not a new phenomenon for Leahy, as she has been involved with fitness for three decades. Her journey reflects immense strength, as she survived breast cancer, calling it a "bit of a hiccup" in her path.

"It’s just been a fitness journey, I suppose. I’ve always been interested and been in the fitness industry for over 30 years," Leahy said.

Hyrox, typically a new-generation thing, came to her through her friends in fitness, and Leahy did not hesitate to try this new challenge for herself.

"Some friends mentioned this Hyrox, this new phenomenon that’s happening, so I thought I would give it a try – and behold. It’s just awesome the way it’s taken off. It’s hard to believe," she added.

Since this decision, she has been actively training to take part in the upcoming Hyrox, and she has inspired many by doing so.

What Is Hyrox, and How Does Debbie Leahy Train for It?

Hyrox is not your regular obstacle race; it tests your strength and endurance, which most 20-year-olds will fail to perform.

There are functional workouts between one-km runs for eight rounds, testing your cardiovascular stamina.

Each competition includes these eight demanding stations:

  • SkiErg (simulated cross-country skiing)
  • Sled push
  • Sled pull
  • Burpee broad jumps
  • Rowing machine
  • Farmer’s carry
  • Sandbag lunges
  • Wall balls

Mental strength is heavily required along with physical strength. As our mind tends to give up way earlier than our body does.

Leahy has an intense workout routine, which is no less than a top level athletes routine, which includes 155 miles (250 km) of cycling, body weight exercises and heavy weights.

She even does complex movements like pull-ups and chin-ups. She also lifts and carries heavy dumbbells when she does her farmer carries.

Along with cycling, she does rowing and ball slams for endurance.

"My world ranking is fourth. I was amazed when I found that out as well. Hopefully, I will be able to get that up a couple of notches in Chicago," Leahy said.

The journey was not easy for Leahy, and it is not for anyone who wants to get out of their comfort zone and take up a challenge.
