The Lifestyle Change Behind John Goodman’s 200-Pound Slimdown

John Goodman’s 200-pound weight loss didn’t happen overnight; it was the result of a calculated lifestyle overhaul.
At his heaviest, the Roseanne star weighed nearly 400 pounds. And after years of struggling with his weight, in the mid-2000s, he made a conscious decision to transform his health for good.
In July 2025, the 73-year-old appeared at the Los Angeles premiere of his film, Smurfs, after his remarkable weight loss. Looking noticeably leaner, Goodman posed confidently for photographers and even playfully squatted for the cameras.
But what is the secret to John Goodman's incredible weight loss? Here is everything you need to know.
John Goodman’s Remarkable 200 Lbs Weight Loss Journey
Goodman's weight-loss journey began in the late 2000s, and the major turning point was quitting alcohol in 2007. This helped him address habits that were linked not only to drinking but also to overeating.
In 2012, John told The Guardian, "It was getting to be too much. It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me, and it had gotten to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death. It was time to stop.”
In 2010, he began working with fitness trainer Mackie Shilstone, who helped him adopt sustainable, healthier habits. Physical activities like logging 10,000 to 12,000 steps on the treadmill, using the elliptical bike, and taking long walks with his dog were game-changers for him. Talking to Today, the actor revealed:
"I was boxing up until then, and I haven’t been able to do that since Covid because I’m lazy. I haven’t been exercising, but I’m going to start a routine again this summer, where I can get some stuff done."
Diet was a cornerstone of Goodman's transformation. He turned to a Mediterranean-style diet plan that included fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and olive oil. Instead of going for harsh food restrictions, he adopted portion control.
The Argo star credits his need to live a better life as his motivation to lose weight. His demanding work schedule was also a factor in his transformation. In his 70s, staying fit helps him keep up with his work.
