The Only Time Arnold Schwarzenegger Lost Mr. Olympia- Here’s What Happened in 1969

Before politics, before the glam of Hollywood, and even before the shine of seven Sandow Trophies, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s aura of invincibility didn’t yet exist.
On September 13, 1969, under the bright lights of Brooklyn, Arnie’s legendary physique was stopped cold. And the man who defeated him was nothing short of otherworldly.
A Walk Down the Past: Brooklyn 1969
The 1969 Mr. Olympia took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; it was a crucial time for the sport as the focus was shifting from classic aesthetics to sheer mass and dominance. At the time, ‘The Austrian Oak’ was a young lad, but he was not new to the sport.

It was his first Mr. Olympia stage appearance, but before that, he had already clinched the NABBA Mr. Universe title three times. He might have won in 1969, but he stood against ‘The Myth’ Sergio Olivia.
He wasn’t built like other men. He was wider, thicker, and visually overwhelming in a way judges had never quite seen before. Standing 5’10” and weighing 240 pounds, Oliva was the original monster of that era, one whose sheer presence even Arnold acknowledged.
The Night of Competition
Even though it was Arnold’s first Mr Olympia, he dominated the stage, flashing three poses, then he headed backstage, motivated enough to win the competition, but the very moment he laid his eyes on the Cuban, he stood frozen.
“I entered the dressing room the way I had been going in everyplace lately, like I was just taking over. It was as jarring as if I’d walked into a wall. He destroyed me. He was so huge, he was so fantastic, there was no way I could even think of beating him,” wrote Arnold in his autobiography.
Both men posed onstage for the Mr. Olympia title, but when Ben Weider announced “Mr. Olympia 1969, Sergio Oliva,” Arnold immediately embraced the reigning king.
That marked the peak of Sergio Oliva and the beginning of Arnold Schwarzenegger's story, as the Austrian would go on to dominate bodybuilding for years to come.
