These Lunch Meats May Harm Seniors More Than You Think

Apr 6, 2026, 2:10 PM CUT

Many seniors rely on lunch meats for a quick meal. But some popular deli options contain enough sodium and preservatives to significantly increase health risks.

As people age, their bodies become less tolerant to saturated fats, preservatives, and sodium, raising their risk of illness. Even simple lunch meats can quickly increase health risks. Let’s look at some options that should stay under the radar.

Pastrami

According to an article in “Cleaver Dude," pastrami is known for its strong flavor, but it involves a high curing process and heavy seasoning. Given that older adults have sensitive stomachs, the spices and curing agents might cause problems. Also, pastrami increases cardiovascular risk if consumed regularly.

Healthy alternative: Lean beef or chicken.

Salami

Salami is a fairly popular meat option, but it contains nitrates, preservatives, and saturated fats that are added during the curing process. This raises cholesterol levels and also clogs the arteries, which can hinder blood flow in older adults.

Healthy alternative: Fresh and unprocessed lean meat.

Ham

Ham is often considered a lean protein option, but it contains a lot of sodium. In fact, the Harvard study published a report in Neurology in 2025, where they mention that the consumption of highly processed meats like ham and salami increases the risk of heart problems, diabetes, premature death, and cancer. The report also highlighted that processed red meat intake increases the chances of dementia.

Healthy alternative: Turkey slices and roasted chicken.

Roast beef

Although roast beef sounds healthy, deli roast beef options are packed with salt and preservatives. Regular consumption can increase the risk of kidney strain and hypertension.

Healthy alternative: Freshly cooked lean beef with added preservatives.

Bologna

Bologna is a highly processed meat option that contains saturated fats and a high amount of sodium. A high sodium intake in seniors can increase the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems. It also contains preservatives, which can make it harder to digest after eating.

Healthy alternative: Chicken breast or Turkey slices without added salt are more senior-friendly options.

Pepperoni

Pepperoni is a popular choice for many non-vegetarians, but it is quite an unhealthy lunch option for seniors. It is high in saturated fat and sodium content, which increases the risk of heart disease, cholesterol problems, and kidney issues as well.

Healthy alternative: Grilled chicken or pizza loaded with Veggies.

Bottom line

Eating healthy doesn’t mean giving up on taste. Small dietary changes can have a big impact on long-term health. Older people can enjoy fresh, simple, and less processed protein sources such as lean beef, chicken, turkey, and plant-based options to stay strong, active, and healthy.
