Amazing physique, elite BJJ skills, and exceptional acting, this is how Tom Hardy’s fans describe him. From Black Hawk Down to The Dark Knight Rises and Peaky Blinders, his performances speak volumes.

With that in mind, let’s break down how Hardy has evolved his physique over the years.

Tom Hardy’s Peak Physique

"My approach was to do a lot of repetitions in order to send messages to my muscles: this helps them start to grow in a way that you can’t make them grow in the gym. To achieve dense muscle, you need a specific kind of training," Hardy disclosed to AskMen.

Discipline and dedication are Tom Hardy’s constants. He follows every training plan his coach lays out. For Bane, Hardy used a structured 4-day split to build balanced muscle groups, optimize recovery, and drive steady strength gains.

He consumed approximately 3,500 kcal per day to make his physique as bulky as possible for his role as Bane. The Academy Award-nominated actor started his career playing a skinny soldier for HBO’s Band of Brothers, and by the time he played the role of Bane, Hardy had already added 30 pounds muscle to his physique.

Working out has always been Tom Hardy’s strongest ally, helping him take on versatile roles throughout his career. But he has evolved beyond that now; he is actively training in martial arts.

Tom Hardy’s Journey Through BJJ

For his film Warrior, Tom Hardy trained in several martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). However, even after the movie was released in 2011, Hardy continued training in BJJ. He was formally introduced to structured BJJ training at the age of 40, after spending years training largely on his own.

“I’ve always been a bit nervous of the fighting martial arts community, because I thought, “Well… This is for them, not for me. I don’t think I belong. I didn’t feel like it was for me, because I was intimidated, maybe,” said Hardy in an interview.

However, once he started taking the classes regularly, he found his calling. “Now it’s more of a meditation or relaxing. I don’t need to win, I don’t care. I always get beaten, but that’s okay.” He concluded.

A blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Tom Hardy has participated in charity competitions to showcase his skills. Interestingly, he was even called out by Arman Tsarukyan for a grappling match, which he politely declined.
