2x Mr. Olympia Shaun Clarida Rejects Competing at 2026 Arnold Classic After Matt Greggo and Derek Lunsford
The bodybuilding world is seeing a rare pattern unfold: three top athletes, Matt Greggo, Derek Lunsford, and now two-time 212 Mr. Olympia Shaun Claridaall turning down an invitation to one of the sport’s most prestigious events: the Arnold Classic. Each of these competitors has the talent, momentum, and fan interest to make a major impact on the 2026 stage, yet all three have chosen the same path this one out.
Why are elite competitors stepping away from the Arnold Classic one after the other?
That’s where this story begins.
Shaun Clarida Confirms He Will Not Compete at the 2026 Arnold Classic
A day ago, on Beyond the Stage TV, Shaun Clarida finally addressed the growing speculation about his next season. At the start of the episode, he made his decision clear:
“I will not be doing the Arnold, that’s my decision. I have not applied for it. Didn’t feel it was in my best interest to do it.”
Clarida went on to explain that he and his coach, John Meadows, carefully reviewed their competitive strategy for the upcoming year:
“John and I discussed some of the plans, maybe this show, maybe that show, but we really sat down and said, with the Olympia being as close as it was, give us the time we need to improve, especially in the legs, and make a run for that title again next year.”
His goal is simple: reclaim the 212 Olympia title by dedicating every possible resource to improvement, not competing in back-to-back major shows.
What made Matt Greggo step out from the Arnold Classic?
“I’m not doing the Arnold. I did it last year, it was great, I got third… but this time I need to skip that and grow.” What is shared with Beyond the Stage TV
Greggo explained that competing too soon would limit his ability to add the size he specifically wanted to his back, hamstrings, and upper chest. His goal is long-term development, not immediate competition.
Words of Former IFBB Pro and show host Fouad 'Hoss' Abiad
Former IFBB Pro and show host Fouad 'Hoss' Abiad also voiced concerns about competitors rushing into the Arnold Classic, especially when the Olympia is the true priority:
“I think it’s a smart move by (Derek Lunsford). He could go in there and lose to Andrew… He doesn’t need the money. He had a really big year. He wants to build that legacy.”
Fouad, when talking about Derek Lunsford, emphasized that the Arnold is high risk, especially for athletes who need recovery and growth more than in another contest.
Shaun Clarida’s choice reflects a larger trend: today’s champions are choosing longevity and progression over chasing every title available. Now, with another Olympia in sight, Clarida is betting on patience and preparation. And if history tells us anything, the “Giant Killer” makes the right moves when it matters most.
