What Are Fasted Workouts? Understanding Benefits and Disadvantages
Many believe that a fasted workout is beneficial for burning the most fat. But Sports nutritionists are divided on this topic because it comes with both advantages and disadvantages.
The effectiveness of this workout depends on your diet, fitness goal, and physical condition. Let’s break it down and understand the science behind it.
Advantages and disadvantages of fasted workouts
A fasted workout is one done on an empty stomach. The workout is done 4-6 hours after eating a meal. After eating, the human body digests and absorbs most of the meal, using it as fuel rather than just glucose.
Whenever there is a high amount of glucose present in the blood, the body uses that glucose as a source of energy. On the contrary, a low glucose level triggers the body to use stored fat as fuel during a workout.
That is why this fasted workout is most beneficial for those who are looking for fat loss. Another benefit of this is that it enhances insulin sensitivity.

Now, talking about the disadvantages, the most common one is that it reduces performance when running fast. It also hampers performance during weightlifting. These movements mostly use stored glucose from our muscles compared to fat.
Apart from that, workouts on an empty stomach can also hamper recovery post-workout if you fail to maintain a proper protein and carbohydrate intake after a workout. Some people can also experience nausea and dizziness because of low blood sugar during a fasted workout.
Now, let’s see some tips one can incorporate during their empty stomach training.
Tips to follow
The most important thing to take care of is staying hydrated, because dehydration leads to fatigue and hinders performance. Use essential amino acids or BCAA as they reduce the muscle breakdown during a workout without breaking the fast.
For proper recovery, one must include a well-balanced diet with a proper amount of carb-rich food after training. The most vital tip is that you must follow these training methods only if you can handle fasting. Because some people perform better during fasted training, but some feel tired and also lose their focus.
So, do you perform a fasted workout? If so, how has it helped your training?
