What Happens When You Take Protein Before Sleep? Muscle, Recovery, and Sleep Explained
To some extent, we all have heard about the benefits of Protein. However, have you ever considered the daily recommended intake? Harvard Health Publishing's article titled “How much protein do you need every day?” recommends 0.36g per pound of body weight.
What happens when we take it at night? There are some specific amino acids, like tryptophan, available in proteins. In the night, these components help the body’s internal functions produce serotonin-like hormones. These play a vital role in quality sleep. Such hormones are also beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels.
Multiple studies have proven that a recommended amount of protein can be beneficial in muscle building when consumed before sleep. RES, PETER T. ran research in 2012 on 16 young men. The participants were weightlifters.

Before going to bed, eight participants consumed 40 g of casein. After the test, it was observed that those eight men had increased muscle-protein synthesis, which is responsible for muscle development and recovery.
It is also observed that young males who consume a daily dose of vitamin D3 before bed have experienced overall muscle growth.
Other Benefits of Protein
When we eat protein-rich foods before going to sleep, it controls our hunger hormones and gives us a feeling of fullness, which is beneficial for weight management.
Having casein at bedtime increases the calories burned in the morning because it does not reduce your body’s ability to burn fat during the night. This provides you with energy gradually and enhances your metabolism and muscle growth.
So, one should consider including a high-protein food at bedtime, which supports muscle building, weight loss, and proper recovery.
