When Jay Cutler Revealed Why He Couldn't Train Like Ronnie Coleman Ever – “Pounding 6 Plates”

When Dorian Yates finally won six consecutive Mr. Olympia titles from 1992 to '97, he proved beyond doubt that High Intensity Training worked. Since then, bodybuilding enthusiasts, including the pros, have continued to debate whether High Intensity or High Volume is superior. However, Ronnie Coleman probably never faced that dilemma because he did both.

While speaking about Coleman's training approach in an episode of the Cutler Cast, Jay Cutler explained exactly how Coleman trained. And while Cutler did dethrone Coleman in 2007, the four-time Mr. Olympia explained why he couldn't match Coleman's intensity at the height of their rivalry.

Jay Cutler Explains How Ronnie Coleman Trained

On October 7, the Cutler Cast Instagram page posted a clip of Cutler reflecting on Ronnie’s training style. "He's in the corner, just pounding six plates a side on the squat," said Cutler. However, what truly surprised Cutler was how effortless it seemed. "There was no resistance," added Cutler, highlighting how effortless Coleman made it look.

His own approach relied on controlled reps. "I was always like a couple of reps, pause. A couple of reps pause," said Cutler. However, Ronnie Coleman's style was just relentless. Cutler compared it to a style that barely allowed the muscle to breathe, let alone rest.

Yet the drive to beat the eight-time Mr. Olympia is what kept Jay Cutler motivated. The former champion explained that he even trained at night because he just wanted to beat Coleman. "At midnight I said, 'I gotta beat this guy. I gotta ride with him,'" recalled Cutler. However, Jay Cutler wasn't the only one who couldn't keep up with Coleman.

No one could keep up with The King

On November 24, Coleman posted a snippet of an interview where he talked about training with his rivals. The King revealed that he and Jay Cutler would often train together, especially when they were on the road. However, based on what Cutler said, the record-setting former champion also admitted that even Cutler couldn't keep up.

“Jay was the only one who would try to work out with me and keep up with me. Once I put those five plates on that squat. He was done," the bodybuilding icon explained. Flex Wheeler fared even worse.

"Flex, not so much. He came to Metroflex and tried to work out… did one set. He was like, ‘Man, it’s too hot in here, and you're lifting too much weight,'" Coleman recalled about his early rival trying to match in the weight room.

So what do you think about Jay Cutler's confession and Coleman's training style? Tell us in the comments.
