When Lane Johnson Trained With Olympic Champion Ryan Crouser

Even the elites take a page out of each other's playbooks once in a while. That's exactly what happened when the Philadelphia Eagles veteran crossed paths with 3x Olympic gold medalist, Ryan Crouser. The shot putter was in the driver's seat.

A little less than 2 months ago, the offensive tackle, who was in Nashville for his wedding, shared a workout session with Crouser, training like the Olympian. As Johnson put it, "If you're Olympian, you are the best of the best."

"Their ability to transfer the force, I think, a lot of the NFL linemen can learn some training techniques," he added.

The workout session was focused on blending NFL line practice with Olympic weightlifting. Explosiveness and power were the core principles that drove the workout session.

The duo began with French contrast training, an advanced athletic method relying on heavy strength lifts immediately followed by explosive plyometric movements.

As Crouser explained the set to the tackle, one instance of such an exercise looks like a set of heavy snatches followed by 30 lbs kettlebell swings, performed as rapidly as possible.

Benching 200 is impressive. But if you can't translate that force elsewhere, it remains simply a PR within the gym. This exercise helps with just that, building multi-dimensional strength that can pay dividends on the field.

Speaking of which, one of the core pillars behind Johnson's monstrous power on the greens is his massive 4000-calorie diet.

What's on the plate behind Lane Johnson's overwhelming force during games

While working out is an essential part of strength and athletic training, diet most often goes unnoticed. For Johnson, the reality couldn't be more different, with a 300g protein a day eating regimen.

"It's about calories, but I mean a lot of steak, a lot of rice, like potatoes," explained the Philadelphia Eagles player. Moreover, he's also limiting his Gatorade consumption.

Some other staples in his diet are grass-fed meats, sea salts, non-inflammatory oils, and organic fruits and vegetables. His personal chef, Justin Massie, heads his home kitchen.

At practice, nutritionist Stephanie Cappola becomes the captain of the eating regimen. As Johnson revealed, these are more than just stylistic choices; they determine whether the players have enough fuel to put out their best performances on the field.
