Many fans know that Mark Henry won the inaugural Arnold Strongman Classic in 2002, but few are aware of how his mother's death and a challenge fueled his victory.

An Instagram post from @wrestlendgame featured one of Henry's interviews, in which he narrated the backstory that led him to prove his worth as the world's strongest man in 2002.

After setting his sights on the 2002 Arnold Strongman Classic, Henry asked the WWE boss, Vince McMahon, to allow him to participate in the contest. However, he risked his position in the WWE to earn it, as McMahon said, "I'm gonna let you know now, if you wanna do it, I'll let you do it. But I just wanna let you know that there's no place for the second strongest man."

Well, most know the end result: Henry won the contest and saved his WWE job, returning to the ring as the rightful "World's Strongest Man" almost three years after his victory.

Interestingly, the issue stemmed from Henry's WWE moniker, "World's Strongest Man," which caused the reigning Strongman winner in 2002 to call him out. Henry, who was mourning the death of his mother, Barbara Jean, at the time, accepted his challenge and claimed the title to prove his moniker. That was a memorable day in the history of Strongman contests.

The Day Mark Henry Proved His Worth

Four months prior to the 2002 competition, Mark Henry returned to heavy lifting for the first time since 1997, when he competed as a professional strongman for the last time.

The playing field was brutal, with elite names like the then World’s Strongest Man winners Svend Karlsen and Phil Pfister, powerlifting legend Andy Bolton, Olympic champion Raimonds Bergmanis, and America’s Strongest Man Brian Schoonveld.

On February 22, 2002, the competition kicked off in Columbus, Ohio, and Henry shocked everyone immediately. He won the opening event by setting a world record at that time, pressing the Apollon’s Axle overhead three times

After that amazing feat, he never looked back. He deadlifted 885 pounds for two reps and pushed a 5,000-plus-pound Hummer with ease. The result: total victory, a $75,000 Hummer, a cruise, and $10,000 in cash.
