While Speaking, Arnold Schwarzenegger Revealed Muhammad Ali’s Routine That Impressed Him

Reg Park inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to push the limits of human physique. But it was the boxing legend Muhammad Ali who truly defined endurance and heart for the bodybuilder.

There's little debate that Ali is the greatest boxer ever, having held the Ring Magazine heavyweight title from 1964 to 1970 and the undisputed championship from 1974 to 1978. The 'Austrian Oak', who reigned the bodybuilding spotlight around the same time, often met Ali, even training together in the same gym at times.

Schwarzenegger claimed that Ali's hardcore training methods left a lasting impression on him. “He had this unbelievable waistline and not only a slim waistline, but when he got punched – in boxing you can get hit below," he admired Ali's tough core on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

That tolerance wasn't accidental, as the former Californian governor elucidated: "I asked him, ‘How many reps do you do? In bodybuilding, we do a thousand reps a day.' He said, ‘I don’t start counting until it hurts.'"

The boxing phenom's training started with a 6-mile run at 5:30 in the morning every day, followed by an intense workout in the afternoons. He worked out six days a week without excuses.

However, Ali's statement, delivered with that deadpan normalcy, was all Schwarzenegger needed to know. In fact, the action star shared that this philosophy was a classic rule in bodybuilding: to train until failure.

Discomfort and pushing through adversities are only the first step towards perfectionism, he explained.

Arnold Schwarzenegger reframes grit to achieve success

The 7x Mr. Olympia was known for his intense training regimes, never shying away from heavy compound lifts and high volume. Ali, who held the high throne inside the boxing ring, embodies those same principles, which surprised even Schwarzenegger.

"I want to make people understand is that this isn’t just in body-building or in training for any sport," he reframed the conversation surrounding what it takes to gain expertise in any discipline.

“In order to physically grow and go towards perfection, you have to go through the pain period and the torture." He explained that building mental grit was much the same.

Quoting Malcolm X, Schwarzenegger destigmatized the attitude around failure, re-emphasizing the importance of falling and picking oneself up repeatedly.

As Ali and Schwarzenegger both proved, endurance sharpens more than just the performance inside the boxing ring or the Olympia stages. It's the foundation for success. Will you apply this philosophy in your own life?
