Is having a dominant champ what makes a division entertaining in the UFC? Or is it the technical prowess that decides? Many might disagree with both and assert that drama is what makes the cut!

While the UFC’s other divisions appear to be gaining strength, the lightweight division continues to stand out as one of the most dominant and headline-driven categories.

This division has produced superstars like Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and many more, but what exactly is the reason behind its massive popularity?

Depth In Talent

Boxing, Muay Thai, Karate, Wrestling, BJJ, the lightweight division has one of the best balances when compared to other divisions. Historically speaking, since the BJ Penn days, the lightweight division was a looked-forward-to free-market real estate; however, Conor McGregor took the division to a whole other level.

His rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov made the lightweight division the most premium in the UFC. The legacy continued beyond that. Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira’s rise to champion, after earlier setbacks in featherweight, added another picture-perfect chapter that fueled the division’s growing popularity.

That’s not all, the Dagestani factor was immense as well. After Khabib’s retirement, Islam Makhachev took the mantle and ruled the division till he moved to welterweight. As of December 2026, Ilia Topuria, another entertaining star, holds the championship belt.

Stacked Roster

Historically speaking, the lightweight division has always been stacked, and it gave UFC its biggest stars. Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Benoit-Saint Denis, Renato Moicano, Alexander Volkanovski(Part-Time), and Michael Chandler.

These are just a few names of the division that shaped it. Apart from that, Anthony Pettis, Rafael dos Anjos, Eddie Alvarez, and many more, the division was stacked from the very start. Out of the top five most PPV sales in the history of UFC, three belong to the lightweight division: UFC 229: Nurmagomedov vs McGregor (2.4 million+), UFC 257: Poirier vs McGregor 2 (1.6 million), and UFC 264: Poirier vs McGregor 3 (1.5 million).

Competitive much?

Unlike other divisions, lightweight consistently delivers elite fights and has produced some of the highest finish rates in the sport’s history.

Conor McGregor knocked out a long list of contenders, Khabib Nurmagomedov dominated stars with submissions, Islam Makhachev blends power and grappling, and Charles Oliveira holds one of the highest finish records in MMA.

Even potentially lackluster fights turn premium: Renato Moicano vs. Benoit Saint-Denis, for example, was an absolute banger, with Moicano nearly breaking Saint-Denis’ jaw.

All in all, better talent, more competitive fighters, and consistency have set the division a class apart.
