Willie Nelson Swears by the Same Simple Diet, Breakfast Daily

Willie Nelson, at 93, seems to have done it all; he has outlasted trends, turbulence, and everything else. And the secret to his long and prosperous health? It’s the first meal of the day. The 12-time Grammy winner keeps his morning meals similar for years so long that he can’t even remember a single bowl of oatmeal every day.

During an interview with Southern Living, Nelson shared that he tries to eat sensibly: "If you want to know the truth," he said, "about all I eat is oatmeal in the morning, and bacon and eggs in the evening." A man who has spent most of his life living on a tour bus, it is understandable, as oatmeal is warm and easily available anywhere in the world.

This type of routine served him pretty well. Oatmeal is a fiber-rich, slow-digesting food that contains complex carbohydrates, which help keep one full for a longer period. It also supports heart health and helps stabilize blood sugar, providing energy to fuel one throughout the day.

Nelson does not specify how he dresses his bowl, but given his no-issues personality, it is safe to assume he likes to keep it simple, with a few drops of maple syrup and berries.

He's not alone in the habit; plenty of legends have lived by simple, unglamorous routines.

From Abbott to Oatmeal: The Simple Life Behind Willie Nelson, The Legend

Willie Nelson was not always accomplished, even though he arrived in Nashville polished, but he sure grew up poor in Abbott, Texas. His upbringing was done by his grandparents; he taught himself guitar before most kids finished grade school.

Nelson made a remarkable change in his life when he sold his first song at age 21, 'Crazy for Patsy Cline.' He struggled for years to finally break through as one of the most defiant figures in country music.

He then defines his career on his own terms. Once you get a taste of that kind of independence, it is hard to go back. Nelson walked away from Nashville's machine; he moved to Texas and built something raw and real. He created a kind of music and lifestyle that stayed with him for decades.

Over 75 years in music, 12 Grammys, and countless miles logged on his tour bus, Honeysuckle Rose, he never stopped moving.

But despite everything, the confusion, the fight with the IRS, the journey, there was one thing that remained the same. Every day, oats. Bland, unexciting, steadfast. Like the man himself.
